Recent reports show many pregnant women in the United States are not consuming fish in amounts recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In June of 2014, the FDA and the EPA revised their joint Fish Consumption Advice, Questions & Answers to encourage pregnant women, those who may become pregnant, breastfeeding mothers, and young children to eat more fish and to eat a variety of fish from choices that are lower in mercury.

Cell Free DNA Testing is a new technology that is a screening test for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down’s Syndrome and Edward’s Syndrome.

This is a test that looks at fetal DNA that is found in the mother’s blood stream. It requires a blood draw from the mother and can be performed as early as 10 weeks. #womenshealth   #pregnancy

Until November of 2009, most women were well aware of the recommendations for breast cancer screening.  Until that time, all women were recommended to begin routine screening mammograms for the prevention of breast cancer at the age of 40 and every year thereafter.  This was the agreed upon standard of care amongst most major medical societies until the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) released an update on the recommendations.

Pain with intercourse is a common problem for women that are postmenopausal. The most common cause of pain with intercourse in postmenopausal women is vaginal atrophy. Vaginal atrophy is a condition in which the vaginal tissues become thin and less elastic due to decreasing estrogen levels.

During your prenatal care the doctor may decide to run some tests to make sure your baby is thriving.  Two of the most common tests that are performed are called the non-stress test and biophysical profile.  These tests may be run either at your doctor’s office or at the hospital. #pregnancy   #womenshealth

Smoking is the most common form of substance abuse is pregnant women. The incidence of smoking in pregnancy is between 10-50%. The incidence is higher in socially deprived populations. Smoking incidence decreases by 30% throughout pregnancy due to voluntary cessation.
