Technology is primed to help us better understand our impacts on biodiversity. The question then becomes, how?

My feeling is, with the advent of the internet of things and open / cheap technology, a potential stream of citizen led data will be facilitated. No longer will we need to wonder how our pets impact on urban biodiversity. See the recent BBC documentary on Secret Life of the Cat:
