Long words, like the one in the image below, would have broken many layouts before responsive design. Today, long words create many failures on phones. This article looks at an assortment of css solutions and browser support for hyphenation. The author concludes with a solution that "will show hyphens for every browser supporting it and will break lines in every other browser".
