House the Homeless

"The final results of a study in five Canadian cities has found that paying for housing and support services for high-needs, homeless people cost nearly the same as leaving them on the street to rotate through shelters, emergency rooms and jails."

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Participants+with+mental+illness+addictions+thrive+after+being+given+apartments+five+year/9979290/story.html?__federated=1
A five-year study that housed people with mental illness and drug addictions in apartments scattered throughout Vancouver found most participants stabilized their lives and coexisted peacefully with their neighbours. The findings mean residents should not be afraid of social housing mixed into neighbourhoods throughout the city, concluded the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s final report into the Vancouver At Home/Chez Soi research project.

"Canadians might assume, incorrectly, that there is nothing wrong with telling American border guards about their plans to smoke pot in the U.S. if they're heading to a state where it's legal. But according to DHS, simply admitting that you've tried marijuana could be enough to get turned away at the U.S. border or permanently banned — a decision left up to the discretion of individual border guards."
Canadian pot tourists heading to Washington State or Colorado to enjoy legalized marijuana in those states shouldn't expect to be waved across the border with a friendly smile.

For those wondering about what it's like making a living as a fisherman, here's a video shot aboard Van Zandt resident Jim Kyle's boat, The Homeshore, while fishing near Sitka, Alaska, earlier this summer. Fishing represents a $14 billion industry along the west coast from California to Alaska and Whatcom County is in a unique position to take advantage of that. We have to stop our waterfronts from being swallowed up by private development!

Love this! Washington State's own 7th District Congressman Jim McDermott helps Stephen Colbert live out his life-long fantasy of throwing a king salmon, Pike Place Market-style.
Congressman Jim McDermott edits the Pledge of Allegiance, supports gay marriage and throws a large salmon Stephen's way.

Former FCC chair: "We should be ashamed of ourselves" for the state of broadband in the U.S.

Former FCC Commissioner: “We Should Be Ashamed Of Ourselves” For State of Broadband In The U.S.

I really like this guy. Former FCC Commissioner Michael Copps spoke at the Library of Congress on June 18 regarding the failure of our broadband policies and the resultant terrible technical performance of our broadband service and connectivity when compared to the rest of the world. As someone who has worked directly with the FCC on this very subject, I can't agree more. Read the short article for more of his very important admonishishment.

Ultimately, he concluded, it all boils down to two questions:
“Whose internet is it anyway? And whose democracy is it anyway?”

Like I said, I really like this guy.

My boyfriend, a seafood purchaser,  brings home seafood 3-5x per week. How often do you eat seafood? Do you agree with these standards?
A bitter fight over how much fish people eat - and thus how clean Washington waters should be - has pitted tribes, commercial fishermen and environmental groups against Boeing, business groups and municipalities.
