The health and well-being of the profession is in crisis. With over half of the profession burnt out, and having higher rates of suicidal ideation, suicide, anxiety and high psychological distress than the general public, it is clear that we are not coping. There are moves to try and make the profession more 'resilient' to the stresses and strains of the day, but why focus on making doctors survive a little bit better, instead of thrive?

As doctors, do we take the time to treat our patients or do we want to only diagnose and leave 'the treating' to others? the problem with that is that it eliminates the important role of care and relationships from medicine. This new proposed approach undermines and eliminates the art of medicine and in that the health and well-being of us all loses.

In the modern day culture of medicine relationships of open hate and hostility can be on display in medicine where the culture is one of lack of support. Yet we have higher rates of burnout and suicide than the general public and any other professional group. Could the quality of our relationships assist us? #doctorsuicide #healthcare #medicine
