"Every kid needs a journey mate–someone stronger and wiser to help her learn how to conquer the fears of childhood and move on toward maturity. Someone who knows when to validate an emotion and when to respond lightheartedly. Someone who oozes with empathy and encourages her to aim high. Someone who is there for her, no matter what.

Ideally, the journey mate is a healthy parent–one who has worked through her own issues of abandonment and therefore does not project her unresolved pain onto her children."

--  From my friend, the wonderful +sherrie eldridge, author of Twenty Things Adopted Kids Wish Their Adopted Parents Knew (excerpt).
Imagine yourself in sunny Florida boarding a ghost mobile for a ride through Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. Adults and children clutch the safety bars of their vehicles as they twist their way through the darkened house. Screams of horror break the silence as ghosts adorned in elaborate finery ...

"Protecting our children doesn’t always mean jumping to their rescue, so lead by example and teach your children to be slow with their tongues, patient in their expectations, and forgiving with their love. We love people for who they are, exactly where they are."

From +Adoption.com  and +Melissa Giarrosso .

Open adoption relationships can be so tough sometimes, mainly because emotions are so high and there’s a lot at stake. How do you keep your children safe?

From +Barbara Freedgood on Korean Adoptees Returning to Korea:

"As parents, we cannot give our children all that they need. As adoptive parents, we can give our children many things, but we cannot restore the identity they lost when we claimed them as our own and shared what we have to offer: our love and our own cultural identities. What we can do is listen to their feelings about their experience and work as hard as we can to keep an open heart, not take it personally and not take it as rejection."

Thanks, +Gayle H. Swift , for this latest review of my book. (I love that you pulled that quote.)

"But the greatest value of The Open-hearted Way to Open Adoption is the philosophical assumption that underpins the book: open adoption is fundamentally an attitude that must infuse the relationship and all of the parenting decisions...Many fear that children will be confused or distressed by having an ongoing relationship with a birth parent/s. Lori responds, “Openness is not the cause of any eruptions but instead can actually be part of the solution to them. If you’ve established an open relationship with your child, he is more likely to allow you into his innermost thoughts and fears. He then doesn’t have to face them without you. But if you are closed, he is more alone.”

"My life was much simpler before I found my birth family. It added layers of complexity nobody needs. But I would do it again as there's a primal need to find your birth family and understand—I'm not sure what. Something to do with that Roots fervor I talked about earlier."

3 Chances and Only 1 More Day

Have you been a bit curious about "The Open-Hearted Way to Open Adoption" but didn't want to shell out $30 for the hardcover version?

+Addison Cooper of Adoption at the Movies has 3 copies of my book to give away. There are 3 chances to enter, 1 each on 3 different sites that hosted our interview this week. Drawing will be tomorrow, so throw your name in the ring, whydontcha.

Click below for chance #1, in which we talk about, among other things, what I'd change in the book now that I have 2 more years of parenting (teens!) under my belt.

"If regular old parenting takes courage, adoptive parenting takes super-courage. Did you know that the word courage comes from the same root as coronary? Ha — no coincidence!"

The last in the Parenting GPS series.

Where to root parenting decisions has a profound effect on the lives of both parents and children, so it's wise to make such decisions mindfully.

"My Teen Wants to Live With His Birth Mom. Now What?"

How would you handle this situation? Do you agree with this advice?

Part 3 in a series.

#openadoption #adoptiveparenting #AQ #adoption
What advice would you have for parents of a teen who says he wants to live with a birth parent? Is that different from wanting to live with another person?

If you've ever considered donating or receiving donor egg, donor sperm, or donor embryos -- or if you're uneasy about being open in your adoptive parenting -- read these comments. These could be the voices of your resulting future children.

An adoptive mom withholds information about birth parents from her sons. Is this okay? Part 2 in the Parenting GPS series.

I had the pleasure of working with Bryan West on trying out a SmileBrilliant TeethWhitening Kit and offering a giveaway on my review blog. The product lived up to the expectations I had, and Bryan was wonderful to deal with. He was personable, stayed in touch to the appropriate degree, and was always kind and professional. It has been a very positive experience, and I have a whiter smile to boot!

Katie led me through my first Pilates class expertly. She knew exactly how hard to work me so that I could find my edge -- to be challenged but also experience success. The studio is clean and bright, the machines well-maintained and also clean. I highly recommend Personal Pilates Plus. Disclosure: I assist with social media for Personal Pilates Plus. I love representing such a wonderful organization.
