+Michael Russell thanks Michael. No, that trail links up to Marmot Pass, just out of frame to the left. Three trails come together at the pass - we hiked up from the East, on the Big Quilcene Trail. The trail south, which you can see in the shot, goes toward Warrior Peak and the Mt. Constance area. We hiked 1/3 mile north from the pass to this viewpoint because I'd been before and knew about the overlook. Great spot!

A Tip of the Mountain's Cap
Mt. Rainier from Bench Lake
Sept. 25, 2016

All summer I've wanted to go up to Mt. Rainier and get some sunrise photos - I live just a short two hours away! But the weather and logistics haven't worked out - until today! I got up at 3:30, left the house before 4:00 AM, crossed into the park about 5:30, and was at the Bench Lake trailhead by about 6:15. It's only a mile to the lake, so I made the lake and got setup (with one tripod leg in the water) just as the sky pinked up. And I got lucky with a nice Lenticular cloud cap on the mountain, and a few other clouds to grab the early sun.

I had a little extra motivation to make this happen this morning because I wanted a decent new shot for +Michael Russell's 5 year anniversary of his theme, +Mountain Monday, #mountainmonday. Happy Anniversary, Michael, for this great theme.

I rented a Panasonic Lumix 7-14mm F4 super wide zoom for a weekend trip to the Washington DC/Virginia area, knowing we would drive to Shenandoah, and its waterfalls. Nice lens, I think! Next I'll have to try the 9-18 Olympus and compare ...
