What ruins tell us is that for thousands of years we’ve gotten up each morning, and spent the day working with others to improve our lives. We’ve gathered healthy food and water. We’ve built and rebuilt our homes and communities. We’ve honored those we hoped would protect us. And at the end of the day, we prayed we’d get another day to do it again.

What we called ourselves changed. Who our leaders were changed. If we had to move, we did. If we had to fight, we did. And each day we tried to summon the strength and wisdom to make good decisions. Our family came first, then our community.

What we find in ruins is what is left behind, but the stories the accumulations tell teach us we are not so different today than long ago. Has there been progress? It depends on how you define progress. Do we have more healthy food and water? Do we have stronger and safer homes? Does our community work better together?

The more I see from the past, and using these criteria, the more I conclude we haven’t made much progress. Our food and water aren’t any more healthy. Our homes aren’t any stronger or safer. And our families and communities aren’t any more functional.

And now I fear that we are ruining our resources as we live, and time may be running out for us. That seems to be betraying all of those prayers of all of those who lived before us. It just takes seeing the enormous work they did to appreciate their sacrifice for us. Please think about that tonight as you ask for another tomorrow.
