The Monarch Festival is this Saturday, September 7th, at Lake Nokomis. This event is lots of fun -- you can mark and release butterflies, try out new arts projects, and listen to live music on a beautiful day at the park.

Sweet Texas Tomboy
By Jan Radder

2 oz tequila
1/2 lime
3 oz peach nectar
Splash agave nectar
3 dashes of Tabasco sauce

Shake vigorously with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.
Garnish with half lime wheel and a sprinkle of paprika.

Chili powder works well, too, instead of the paprika.

Did the city cut the mosquito killing budget? Seriously. Enough.

There usually aren't a lot of mosquitoes in Minneapolis because the city is on top of spraying. This year is really terrible.

Is your organization a partner for Safe and Supportive Schools in Minnesota? Ask me why they ought to be and how they can become a partner in the Safe Schools for All Coalition.

My people -- downtown is great, but don't walk around alone drunk, please. There have been increasing numbers of violent robberies downtown.

I sometimes need to be reminded that reasonable precaution is prudent.

It's the last day to register for the early rate, $25. See you there!

Tomorrow's cooking adventure! It will be be an all seafood recipe because +Jan Radder doesn't eat land critters. I am looking forward to buying the saffron. And it will have to have olives (maybe capers instead?)

We have rented a bouncer from State of Fun for 6 consecutive years for our kids' backyard birthday parties! This is a family owned and operated business. We have always received prompt service and the equipment has been solid. They have made the process very easy and always review the expectations we should put in place to keep kids safe with the bouncer.

I appreciated the clear conservation focus of the staff. The animals here are very well cared for. I was also enchanted by the incredible orchid garden. It was as nice as many of the orchard gardens I've voted at botanical gardens. Really, it's almost an attraction on its own. I wish we had more time to swim in the beach area. Bring your swimwear and snorkel!

Liked: the largest aquariumm with the whale sharks and manta rays was amazing. Disliked: not very educative. I couldn't learn much about the incredible things I was looking at. Even the species ID cards didn't include many of the animals in the displays. They certainly didn't give much information about them. Compared to the Boston Aquarium, Shedd in Chicago, Mote in Sarasota, or Monterey Bay this was just disappointing.

Update, December 2015. The original beauty of this location is back. The last three times I've been here, everything I've had had been perfectly beautiful, delicate, and delicious. Update, July 2013. The food has slipped some since my first review and return visits have met with spotty service. Original, May 2013. I had a Groupon to Kiku Bistro and checked out the place on Friday night. They still have the "Mt. Fuji" sign-up, but the door had a copy of their menu posted. My first pleasant surprise was that the happy hour is from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm Monday through Friday. It was a very loaded happy hour menu, too. The sushi rolls we ordered were absolutely beautiful. My favorites were the crazy tuna and dragon roll (complete with face and tail!) Check it out before everyone discovers this gem! (And take photos to share!)
