While hiking in a state park near Muskegon, Michigan recently I came across this dead tree next to the trail. The bark was gone but the wood just below the bark had this shallow etchings on them. I suppose it could be man-made but it seemed more like a worm or something. Anyone know where such "design" arise?

The University of Michigan yesterday dedicated a new highly energy efficient modular data center (MDC)  manufactured by HP. The MDC uses external air for cooling much of the year and includes many adaptive features to enhance the PUE which we expect will be only a little above 1. This MDC is a Tier 1 data center housing shared HPC facilities for the campus. It is part of the UM NextGen strategy that includes a portfolio of shared cloud resources for the community provisioned both locally and remotely. See more at http://www.nextgen.umich.edu/ and at http://www.datacenterknowledge.com/archives/2012/06/14/michigan-unveils-first-hp-ecopod-modular-unit/?utm-source=feedburner&utm-medium=feed&utm-campaign=Feed%3A+DataCenterKnowledge+%28Data+Center+Knowledge%29

The MDC is the light colored unit in the foreground. The large structure in the background is an unrelated cooling tower for the nearby campus buildings. The site will accommodate two other modules with both space and power (1 megawatt per module).

Victoria Stodden at Columbia brought this to my attention. I find it to be an interesting development as a step towards executable journals, maintenance of the reproducibility of science in the age of computational discovery, and as an example of codes as a web service.

As you know, the Obama Administration has been actively considering the issue of Public Access to the results of Federally Funded Research this year. They have recently completed a year-long Interagency Working
Group examination of the issue, and have had the opportunity to consider the public input contributed during the RFI process that ended in January. Please consider signing the petition on the White House website (link below) requesting action on this issue, starting on Monday, May 21st. If the petition garners 25,000 signatures within 30 days, it will be reviewed by White House staff, and considered for action.

I support this petition and gave signed it.
