INTEGRITY

50 years ago today, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, second-in-command Vasilli Arkhipov of the Soviet submarine B-59 refused to agree with his Captain's order to launch nuclear torpedos against US warships and setting off what might well have been a terminal superpower nuclear war.

The US had been dropping depth charges near the submarine in an attempt to force it to surface, unaware it was carrying nuclear arms. The Soviet officers, who had lost radio contact with Moscow, concluded that World War 3 had begun, and 2 of the officers agreed to 'blast the warships out of the water'. Arkhipov refused to agree - unanimous consent of 3 officers was required - and thanks to him, we are here to talk about it.

City Lights

Just shot this one tonight, of San Francisco from the Berkeley hills, featuring the Bay Bridge (with Yerba Buena Island in the middle).  The orange-lit area near left is the toll plaza, the widest stretch of road in the world (somewhere around 35 lanes counting both sides); the white tower on the right edge is the new bridge under construction (you can see its dark outline to the right of the lit bridge); and in the upper right is the Transamerica pyramid with a light on top.

For the #urbansnap  "Zig Zag" theme, with +Sam Breach and +Kristine Ward (+Urban Snap); #cityscapesunday  with +Michael Bandy; #nightscapes  with +Christopher Prins (+Nightscapes); #streetsofsanfrancisco  with +andi rivarola (+The Streets of San Francisco); #freshpics  with +Trevor Farrell (+Fresh Pics); and #bridgesaroundtheworld  with +Carra Riley and +Knut Arne Gjertsen (+#BridgesAroundTheWorld).

Consciousness of Animals

I just thought of this now.
What gives us, humans, the authority to declare what is conscious and what is not? Especially that it's a subject that we still know so little about.
Is it intelligence? Well, some animals, dolphins and chimps, are more intelligent that some humans! Language? Animals have their own means of communication! There are still plethora of studies digging into the issue of consciousness/awareness.
Are we just being human-centric in our thinking?
Here is a #VSauce  video about consciousness:

He had just saved her from a fire in her house, rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into her front yard, while he continued to fight the fire. She is pregnant. The firefighter was afraid of her at first, because he had never been around a Doberman before. When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest. A photographer from the Charlotte, North Carolina newspaper, “The Observer,” noticed this red Doberman in the distance looking at the fireman. He saw her walking straight toward the fireman and wondered what she was going to do. As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had saved her life and the lives of her babies, and kissed him, just as the photographer snapped this photograph…."

5 Deadly Terms Used By a Woman

1) “Fine” – This is the word women use to end an argument when she knows she is right and you need to shut up.
2) “Nothing” – means “Something” and you need to be worried.
3) “Go Ahead” – this is a dare, not permission, don’t do it.
4) “Whatever” – A women’s way of saying screw you.
5) “That’s Ok” – She is thinking long and hard on how and when you will pay for your mistake.
Bonus Word: “Wow!” – This is not a compliment; she’s amazed that one person could be so stupid.
