Need to design some water vessels with a specific fluid amount? You can use the 3D printing utility to measure the volume of a closed surface. That includes also the mesh modifiers generate on the fly such as boolean tools and subdivision surface and bevel etc.

This does only work with mesh bodies and not spline screw objects (sad face). But the polar points do not have to be welded together so you can just use a side profile and the screw modifier if you want. Or loft horizontal profiles into a volume.

Pretty nice.

Partition issues with Win 10 installation? PRO tip: disconnect the boot camp USB jump drive and boot win 10 from a CD. Save yourself 3 hours of wasting time dealing with partitions HDs hacking boot camp assistant and such.

Win 10 installer is as flawed as previous versions

+Claas Kuhnen far as I know win 7 have same activation behavior when you change hardware. How ever it's unclear how much you can alter your setup. I have changed motherboard and video card without problems. I don't have facts about it but I'd assume it's also about what licence you have. It's sounds logical to me that OEM licence does this because it's licence applied to one computer only.

I got interviewed by Marius from Render.ST a render farm I use for my commercial work. In this post I talk a little about my furniture work and how Blender was an integral part of the design and creative process.

Enjoy ;)

Maybe the most challenging aspect of our working lives is bringing new things to life and have people using them. This is particularly true for industrial designers, whose job is to combine functionality with aesthetics, and create things others love.

+Ross McIntyre  Thanks for the comment. I am happy you like the work. But I would not even say that those are Dieter's principles. I think they are quite universal. You can see already in the Bauhaus work (furniture) them being applied. Maybe it is also a cultural aspect of questioning design decisions. However Dieter framed them very well into a modern context as an opposite to effect design - something you see a lot in todays fast paste time.

Started to do my first test with the animation nodes and the inclusion of curve tools as nodes. Interesting idea. A little complicated UI workflow because you need to build all those nodes but later for computational and generative work this might be pretty cool.

Looks however that some surfacing tools were removed. I only see loft and revolve. Patch and such seem to be missing.

Because the nodes produce a mesh object you can then add modifiers to that mesh but not mesh edit it obviously.

So for that later you can bake a mesh body and then sculpt the rest.

But this works nice for complex revolves like this where you better do this via lofts. The dome top turned out to be pretty easy and well working.

You can get the add-on here:

Finished the Libman brush included particle based bristles.
Man shared mesh data local orientation along individual object centers and proportional editing is amazing for this work.

One our of nice puzzle. Maybe I should rebuild this as solids for Fusion 360. Too bad printing that toy would be quite pricy.

Installing Win10 and using bootcamp but you experience this?

No big deal, all you need it to edit the Bootcamp64.MSI and remove a software check. I guess the Bootcamp software from Apple is not yet updated to support Windows 10.

Makes sense even NVIDIA doesn't get their act together because Win 10 can only find one of my 2 GPUs.

All the details here:

+Frank Helmschrott Hey Frank - I think you are most definitely right, but it seems all hardware is well supported - just not the NVIDIA cards - but as I can read online that is not just limited to Macs running windows 10. So I would say this is currently an issue with Win 10 being so new.

I only need Win for running Revit and VirtualBox with Win10 runs pretty fast actually to my surprise.

I was just curious to see how Win10 is and if it is worth the upgrade - change.

So tried to test win10 and guess what Win10 installer is after 2 hours of installing refusing to get past the create account phase. Good job Microsoft.

If no password was entered installer requires one.
If no hint is entered installer requires one.
After entering a password and hint installer says "something went wrong".

And if you google it looks so many have that problem:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/something-went-wrong/d903a845-dd8e-49aa-9e2c-b253b0961838?page=1&auth=1

And to fix it they suggest disconnect hardware hard disks keyboard and such. Sure MS get your installer right first. This ain't the 90s anymore.

Back to win7.

Just make a full backup (image) of the HDD and copy also all files etc, make clean install and bring things back, if it's fail you can restore to previous state with the image.

It's easy when all staff is on Dropbox-Drive-Copy-Box-OneDrive and you have 2TB external HDD...

Maybe this is finally the end of for-profit testing that measures/rewards short-term memorization and not analytical thinking.

Never understood why this industry became so important instead of better high-school standards.
A growing number of colleges and universities are 'test-optional,' even as millions of students a year take the ACT or SAT.

Just yesterday found this openGL lights add-ons. It is pretty neat tool to quickly have different openGL lights. Specifically it solves many of the Blender default contrast issues.

You can get it here:

Be careful about this place and Groupon. They do not honor the fine-print on the Groupon website. I called twice to make an appointment and was told different stories about why they do not accept a Groupon deal on the weekend. If one does not want to honor deals, then do not simply offer deals. Thats borderline scam. Fortunately Groupon gave me a full refund and I will never recommend Belle Sante Spa to anybody.

I went to Blufin Sushi few times - their Sushi is so so but the Woods have no other option. If you go to a real Sushi place you will notice the difference. But taste can be subjective. What most rubs me with the place and this is why I will never eat there agin, is the arrogance and rudeness of the staff - specifically with Groupon. First time we asked if we could use it for lunch while dining in and we were told it is accepted. We ordered few things and some lunch specials. And afterwards we were lectured that lunch specials are excluded from the lunch Groupon deal. Nice. Second time I over the phone ask if I could place an order for pick up and use the lunch Groupon. I arrive mention the Groupon and rudely being lectured again that Groupon are only accepted for dine in. The person I talked to over the phone joined the conversation explaining that she thought it was ok and was quickly informed as well that she made a mistake. Instead of saying sorry for the misunderstanding and simply making an exception in this case because I informed myself via the phone before placing the order, the employe insisted on not accepting the Groupon deal. Customer service 101 fail. I simply turned around, went to Kroger and enjoyed a 1/3 cheaper Sushi which actually tasted surprisingly good for a grocery store - I am not sure if the Sushi was in the end not even better than BluFin anyway. One might think come on Kroger? Make a taste test. Some good Kroger rolls vs BluFin rolls. BluFin might look nice but flavor wise it lacks. And in the future I will rather give my money to the quite polite and friendly staff at my Kroger store than the arrogant and snoddy brat of a server at BluFin. I must say eel Sushi from Kroger is actually pretty spot on.
