I shared this with my first-year students and they really enjoyed it.

A response to Damon Horowitz's recent Chronicle article, or more accurately, a response to the comment stream on that article.

Good to see you have maintained your caliber of work through the years, Dr. Reid. As someone who enjoys pure learning and yet sees the value of applicable knowledge, it is a telling (and very disappointing) thing to observe. I'm going to have to start reading more of your posts.

suddenly looks like adding people to circles is going to be a full-time job.

I hired someone to do mine. This is the babysitting/lawnmowing after school job of the future. I had to give access to my account, but I trust them- they're in my Friends circle.

+Ted Fristrom I don't know.... I thought Peg's book did a decent job of thinking about distributive cog in non-fyw environments as well as in fyw.... an email discussion list... a poem.... but I guess you're asking for a critique of what we (often) do in fyw which is not distributive at all.... or rather we rarely draw on the insights from work in situated/distributive cognition when designing fyw curriculum/activities.... that's true enough. Syverson's book then (written circa 10 yrs ago me thinks) could have started that discussion but didn't....

I enjoyed this short analysis, Alex. I especially like what you say about the real-world risks of communication. And your thoughts about the doggerel of Facebook jibe with the lackluster that platform's had for me lately.

Still thinking on the ethics of this circles business. If I add you to my circle and then post, I'm foisting this on you, right? Unless you block me, but that requires some action on your part.

Because of the way G+ handles people who are not in circles, there's actually no need to filter; there's already a default filter running all the time. If you add someone, and they don't add you to a circle, your comments are only visible via the "Incoming" section of the stream. Your posts are effectively invisible to them until they view that section. The result is much closer to Twitter/broadcasting than FB.

I'm not sure how G+ handles @ notifications from people outside circles. If those are blocked as well, that's a problem.
