We would like to remind all 1301 members that there will be a quarterly membership meeting on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 1000 at the union hall.

In addition to member-driven questions and concerns, we will be discussing a Workers' Comp carve-out plan known as the WORKERS’ COMPENSATION EXPEDITED RESOLUTION PROCESS. This plan has been in development for several years and has been designed to more adequately meet our specific needs in the case of an on-the-job injury. This plan requires a vote by our membership, so voting will open on January 30, 2013 after the meeting and will close Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at 1700.

Also, with the election of Jeff Tape to the position of Director, we now have a vacancy for a Trustee. If interested, please submit a letter of interest to the Local 1301 offices by 1700 on Monday, February 4, 2013.

Finally, we would like to announce the appointment of Matthew T. Wiggins to the position of Director. Matthew will be handling the coordination of some of our biggest charitable fund raising events. Matthew has a desire to serve and a big heart for several children's charities near and dear to us all. With him secured on the board, we also plan on finally coming in first place at the next annual "Jamie Foxx Look-A-Like Contest". Please join us in welcoming him to the Board of Directors.

With regret, the Kern County Firefighters Board of Directors voted to accept the resignation of Vice President Tim Holliday yesterday, December 12, 2012. Tim has been a member of this board for over 8 years and has been an essential part of the success of 1301. Tim helped lead the way to a more service-based Local and broadened not just the service to our members but to the community as a whole. We wish him luck in his new ventures and want to thank him for his tireless service.

We will be accepting letters of interest and resumes for the position of Vice-President. These items need to be turned into the 1301 office no later than December 28, 2012 at 1200. A selection committee will make their decision soon after that date.

We have had to push up next week's phone banking to Monday, 10/29/12 at 1700 at the Union Hall. We will be providing drinks and food. There is an excellent chance the game will be on as well. We have 14 phone lines ready to go, three flat screen televisions, a refrigerator full of drinks, and food being delivered. Come out and put one to use for an hour or two Monday night.

If you can't make it to the Monday night phone banking, we could still use your help on Saturday. Precinct walking will be happening from 0900 to 1200.  We will meet up at the Union Hall and have all the materials you will need.

Don't forget, we have just a few more opportunities to reach as many undecided voters as we can. With the recent injection of cash into the "Yes on 32" campaign from unknown, out-of-state donors, our chance to inform people on just how unfair prop 32 is will be closing fast. Our best asset is YOU! Polls have responded favorably to our efforts on the ground. Helping out for a few hours may not sound like much, but YOUR efforts, along with the work of our brothers and sisters up and down the state, are starting to pay off.

Any questions can be answered by calling Kim at the office at (661) 864-1301.

Changes to Staff:
It has been a busy week for Local 1301. We have added new personnel and new board members. We have also had to say goodbye to our Administrative Assistant, Kim Salas. Kim took over the day-to-day administration of the union hall after Judi House retired last year. She worked tirelessly on political campaigns essential to this union in that time, and was a big part of modernizing and streamlining the operations of Local 1301. We all owe her our gratitude for her service and wish her luck in continuing her education and her new position with Senator Michael Rubio.

With that, we are happy to announce the hiring of our new Administrative Assistant, Jocelynn Moore. Jocelynn has been with us for only a week and is quickly getting up to speed. She was selected from an overwhelming response of highly qualified candidates. Her experience, education, and skills made her an easy choice for the position. We are excited to have her, and look forward to her service to 1301 and its members. Welcome aboard Jocelynn!

We have also selected Kevin Kim as an appointee to the vacant Trustee position left on the board after the election of Jeff Tape to Director. This year has seen a number of departures from the Board of Directors. With that loss of experience, we have gained some younger board members with new perspectives, ideas, and abilities. It is encouraging to see guys step up to the call of the needs of 1301. Thank you Kevin, for your interest in serving the membership.

Workers' Compensation Expedited Resolution Process
Voting has closed on the ERP MOU presented to the membership in January. In a nutshell, this is an agreement that would streamline the Workers' Comp process; putting Doctors back in control of treating our industrial injuries. This new plan speeds the process up, saving time and money. With 8% of the membership voting (43 members), the MOU was approved by our membership by a 100% vote. The agreement will be sent to the Board of Supervisors, then to the State before being implemented. There will be more details given as this process continues.

Station Visits
Arrangements are underway for 1301 Board visits to the field in March. This time around, we will be visiting A Shift. These visits are meant to meet our members at the station to address their concerns, answer questions, and touch bases with them on what we have been doing. If you are working A Shift in March, start putting together any questions you may have. Feel free to bring in any concerns from the other shifts at your stations.

Please share this message with your crews. The best way to stay in touch with important union matters is to sign up for membership on our website, IAFF1301.org. As a union, Kern County limits our specific use of Groupwise or other County-owned communication tools. You will also have difficulty downloading documents or viewing links because of County IT policy. Messages that are sent to the station can be forwarded to private emails to be viewed as intended, but it would be easier to sign up for email directly from 1301.

Signing up for the website and our General Newsletter guarantees you will be up to date on issues that affect you. You also have access to member forums that only increase the communication between members and the board on important matters.

If you have not signed up for membership or are not receiving email alerts from 1301, now is the time!  Important information on political action, special events, and membership meetings are sent out to members of this site.  If you have not taken the time to sign up, please do so at http://www.kerncountyfirefighters.org/register.cfm. Registering takes only a minute, and once your request is received, access will be granted the same day.

For those who have previously registered and are not receiving email, please log in and click the link for "Edit my Profile" and verify that your contact information and email address are correct. You also need to make sure that the box "General Newsletter/Email" is checked.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Palomo to the position of Vice President of Kern County Firefighters Local 1301. Mark has been a Director of the Board for nearly seven years. In that time, he has been an instrumental part of member representation and political action. We wish Mark luck in his new role and thank him for his continued service to the membership.

Mark's appointment leaves another Director vacancy. If you are interested in this position, please submit a resume and a letter of interest to the 1301 offices before 1200 on Friday, January 18, 2013. Please address these items to the attention of the Appointment Selection Committee.

We would also like to inform you of a change in business hours that we feel will better serve the membership. Starting Monday, January 7, 2013, we will be open for business from 0900 to 1730. We will be closed for lunch each day from 1200 to 1300.

We are entering the final week of this long fight against Prop 32. Polls are moving in our direction and are showing that the massive efforts of firefighters across the state are paying off! We need to fight this thing until the end to ensure that Prop 32 goes down and we send it's proponents packing.

When polls first started, we were 20 points behind. We have now pulled a point ahead but their is still a large number of undecideds out there (17%). We need to do all we can to capture those votes.

We will be hosting our last phone banking effort tonight at the union hall and we will have pizza, drinks and Monday Night Football. We will start at 1700. Families and friends are welcome to help. We hope to see you there.

Starting Saturday, November 3, 2012 and continuing through election day, we will be organizing with CTA on the Get Out The Vote Campaign (GOTV). We will take any and all willing volunteers during that time. As soon as details are finalized, they will be passed on to you.
