Celebrating Life's Unexpected Opportunities
Over the past year, I've been given opportunities to learn what's important in life.  That's a nice way of saying that the unexpected turned our lives upside down.   I haven't written about them, because they were such personal experiences that affected my ...

Welcome!  I am Julie Johnson.  I am a literacy coach in a K - 5 building half day and will be teaching 5th grade ELA the other half of the day.  We are trying something a little different this year.  The math coach and I will job share the day, and we will co-teach with the special education teacher.  About half of our students have IEPs for Language Arts.  In addition, our literacy classroom will become a model classroom for integrating technology, creating digital reading and writing workshops.  It's going to be an exciting year (and yes, I'm a little nervous about how it will all work out) with lots of learning for both me and the students.  Groups like Write About Reading are invaluable as I learn from doing what I am asking my students to do.  The conversation and reflection with colleagues deepens my learning and feeds my soul.  :)

Getting in close to the wire.  Nick Sousanis' thinking got me thinking about unflattening my classroom.  It's the beginning of the changes I hope to make this school year.

A few days late (nothing new there)...but here's my reflection on chapters 1 and 2.  Now, I get to dig into all the great thinking that's already been posted.

I loved that you thought about yourself as a reader and what you did while you were reading. It's a great idea to record your reading experience first, then it is easier to model that for the students. This helps keep you actively engaged and intentional about your instruction.
