Today’s featured Memories in the Making artist is Alice. Alice lights up with delight when her artwork is praised. She has had her artwork in the Memories in the Making Auctions for the past several years and raised quite a sum of money for the Alzheimer’s Association. She is a natural. As a young woman, Alice received awards for five of her paintings. She had to curtail her art making when she started working. She taught art to middle school students and worked in her uncle’s button factory as office personnel. One of her fond memories from the past is chasing a litter of 9 St. Bernard puppies that she bred and raised, around a lake on her property. Alice is an avid reader and enjoys informative television. She mentors another MIM artist in whose company she enjoys.

Memories in the Making is an Alzheimer’s Association art therapy program for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Volunteer facilitators help people with dementia – many of whom often have no art background – create drawings and paintings. These sessions provide participants social interaction and boost their self-esteem while opening the channels of communication with loved ones.

Today’s featured Memories in the Making artist is Dr. Hyman M. Glorious Butterfly is another entry from the extensive portfolio of Dr. M. He enjoys the company of his fellow artists and especially likes when the weather is nice and the group paints outdoors on the patio at Palo Alto Commons. The atmosphere is stimulating, yet Dr. M. goes deep inside himself and produces paintings as delicate and glorious as Glorious Butterfly.

We recently awarded a new investigator research grant to Eli Puterman, assistant professor at the UCSF School of Medicine for his study, “Improving Caregiver’s Daily Lives with Exercise: A Randomized Study”. With a growing number of adult caregivers throughout the population, Eli’s study will examine whether increased activity benefits previously unfit, high-stressed caregivers and whether this activity also changes caregiver’s stress response biology.  Eli hopes through his work to help create “interventions that help larger groups of people all at once”.

In this video, Eli talks about his inspiration to do caregiver research, his current work, and his hopes for the future of caregiver research.

"What I’ve come to discover, though, is a silver lining to her current condition.  We’ve never been a particularly warm and fuzzy family.  Not that love wasn’t ever expressed, but we were never very huggy-kissy.  Until the last few years." #endalz   #alzheimers
