A coronal mass ejection (CME) was detected at about 1811 UTC on 26 July 2013 that may be Earth-directed.  If so, it may trigger strong geomagnetic disturbances.  This may cause Aurora, and provide the conditions for exotic propagation of VHF radio signals.

Possible arrival is late Sunday through Tuesday.  The arrival time depends on the speed of the CME.

Check out the huge plasma filaments flying away from the Sun during this period, in this video: http://g.nw7us.us/19dwjPB 

The video is a look at 48 hours of solar activity as seen through the 304-Angstrom filter (red is the artificial color; the original images are not in a color that we can see). The images were captured from June 15, 2013 through June 17 by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).

Look at the size of the newest sunspot region, 11734.  It is a good size, but not as complex as 11731.  We expect some flaring activity.  The 10.7-cm flux has risen, so higher shortwave frequencies are coming alive.  Enjoy the signals on HF, over the next few days, at least.
