I'm a little late getting around to sharing this, but here's another great essay from Schneier on unrealistic fear-based reactions. Given last night's awesomely successful landing of the MSL Curiosity, I'd like to offer a corollary: let's make sure to give rare risks with positive goals and outcomes their due. I hope Curiosity discovers all kinds of great stuff, but any future success or failure it has shouldn't change our desire or resolve to continue pushing these boundaries and reaching further than before. Let's not be afraid to fail, and fail spectacularly, again and again, in search of the next perfect landing.

Great article on the politics of abortion.
"There is no universal good option. There is no universal bad option. But for each individual there is an option that is the least bad. Here is why I am pro-choice. If someone has to make a decision and the best they can hope for is the least-bad option, I don’t believe I have any business making that choice for them."
As I write this, it is 1:17 am on Wednesday, June 20th, 2012. I am lying awake in bed, trying to decide whether or not to have an abortion. Of course, we don’t call it an abortion. We call it “a proce...

This sounds like a lot of vague generalizations and I'm not really sure what your point is. But I'm responding because it sounds like what you're saying is that legalizing abortion would somehow lead to endangering millions of lives, which I personally disagree with and moreover the research says otherwise. I do agree that the quality of care available to women (and everyone, really) needs to be improved, especially in poorer ares of the world, and that includes more honest communication about abortion, better sex education in general, and easier availability of contraceptives, plus hopefully some work towards de-stigmatizing the use of contraceptives. But none of that changes the point of the article: abortion sucks, no matter what the circumstance, and that doesn't mean we should block it through legislation, especially dumb legislation that seems to only help the people who don't really need it.

So now the massive bee die-offs can be traced back more or less to our subsidization of high fructose corn syrup. Yippee.

BLEH, this shit is toxic to the point of almost being considered poison by nutritionists. I'm pretty sure the federal government subsidizes this crap.

So the WakeMate is dead, and the Jawbone Up is still AWOL after massive product failures. When is someone going to make a sleep/activity monitoring wristband device that works?
Hello everyone. MiLife+. Many of you received an email this morning concerning a new product called MiLife+. Today is the first time I have heard of this product and I am shocked at the way it was pro...

I ran across this image recently and thought it was quite thought provoking. This article does a good job of highlighting different ways to think about it, but even more so I encourage you to read the comments (what?!?! quality comments on the INTERNET?!?!), which present a lot of interesting arguments and viewpoints on the significance (or lack thereof) of this image.

My take, though, ultimately remains the same: don't piss in the pool.
This image has been going around the intertubes recently, I saw it first on Planet 3.0 and again on APOD. It is one of those interesting illustrations of large quantities that seems surprising or anti...

"...before expiring peacefully at its home in a high school physics book. Facts was 2,372."
A quick review of the long and illustrious career of Facts reveals some of the world's most cherished absolutes: Gravity makes things fall down; 2 + 2 = 4; the sky is blue.
