This is pretty cool. One of the newly discovered uses for graphene, the single layer of carbon atoms for which Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov won the Nobel Prize for Physics, is the examination of liquids under an electron microscope. The process of examination requires liquids to be encapsulated with a solid, something that prevented their high resolution study. Now, Jong Min Yuk of the University of Berkeley has been able to study the formation of nanocrystals through the use of graphene. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17628145

The miracle material. My research centers around synthesizing it in interesting geometries, so I have started memorizing the potential applications in preparation for my defense. The interesting part, is that this stuff is so new most of these applications usually don't pan out. This is a neat one though.

The partial remains of a fossilized foot show that Lucy, our common human ancestor, was not alone in East Africa 3-4 million years ago. While they cannot definitively identify the species, they do know that it was not Australopithecus Afarensis, to which Lucy belonged. The remains are distinguishable from Afarensis due to a big toe that is set to allow tree climbing, whilst also remaining upright when walking on the ground. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17533826

Pretty freaking sweet. A giant picture of the Milky Way galaxy. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-17539315
Two UK-developed telescopes are used to make a colossal picture of our Milky Way Galaxy, to reveal the detail of a billion stars.

If you put it on mute, all James Cameron needs is a cigar and endorsement from Dos Equis. "I don't always dive to the the deepest place on earth, but when I do, I make it look like I'm playing Super Smash Bros." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthvideo/9168817/James-Camerons-first-footage-from-the-deep.html

There are nearly 600,000 emperor penguins in Antarctica - twice as many as was previously thought - according to a new satellite survey.

Regardless of your views on how Apple has handled its workers rights issues in China, for Li Keqiang to say this is a pretty remarkable push towards greater accountability and transparency. Li also said that China would strengthen its intellectual property rights, which would be a major boost to not only foreign investors and companies as well as Chinese consumers and firms. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17553296
A senior Chinese politician calls for foreign companies to "pay more attention" to workers as Apple chief executive Tim Cook visits a supplier.
