I'm inviting everyone to the Mr. Mauckingbird Pageant, a fundraiser for Philly's only gay theater company. Kevin Brown and I will be there shooting tons of photos. This promises to be a GREAT time!! Join Us on Sunday April 15 at 6:30 pm.
I've received a lot of requests to share the list of required texts for my Sociology of Race/Ethnicity course (SOC 3600, Spring '12). I've long since forgotten how to tinker with my university webpage so I'll just post 'em here...
1. Ignatiev. How the Irish Became White. 2. Alexander. The New Jim Crow. 3. Moran. Interracial Intimacy. 4. Bonilla Silva. Racism Without Racists. 5. McCall. Makes Me Wanna Holler.
A student in my race/ethnicity found this link to what the article refers to as "white slaves." In the cultural landscape of the 1860s, they weren't regarded as white. Nonetheless, it's a fascinating reminder of how race (whiteness and blackness) is socially constructed.
For those who are interested in my race/ethnicity class (spring '12), we've been discussing the several classic speeches on race in America, including Barak Obama's speech on race delivered in Philadelphia on March 18, 2008.
