Inactivity Changes the Brain

New studies now show that exercise remodels the brain, and inactivity can also change the way the brain functions.

A number of studies have shown that exercise can remodel the brain by prompting the creation of new brain cells and inducing other changes. Now it appears that inactivity, too, can remodel the brain, according to a notable new report.
The study, which was conducted in rats but likely has implications for people too, the researchers say, found that being sedentary changes the shape of certain neurons in ways that significantly affect not just the brain but the heart as well. The findings may help to explain, in part, why a sedentary lifestyle is so bad for us.
Until about 20 years ago, most scientists believed that the brain’s structure was fixed by adulthood, that you couldn’t create new brain cells, alter the shape of those that existed or in any other way change your mind physically after adolescence.

Why You Should Switch From Chocolate to Carob

Cocoa contains an assortment of chemicals, many of which can be addictive. Some marijuana-like chemicalsi in chocolate stimulate the brain in ways that can produce addiction. Another chemical, theobromine, is similar to caffeine, though less potent and in the same methyloxanthine chemical family. Theobromine is connected to a number of health risks.
A study found that theobromine can be found in human breast milk when mothers eat chocolate bars. Theobromine concentration in breast milk was at its peak 2 to 3 hours after the mother ate chocolate. Nursing babies whose mothers eat chocolate will also be getting theobromine in their mother’s milk. And while studies should be done to determine the effects of theobromine ingested by infants, animal studies have demonstrated the harmful effects of theobromine taken up by fetuses in utero.

Health Benefits of Carob

Because it’s a legume, carob is high in protein. It’s also a good source of fibre, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, calcium, antioxidants and phytonutrients.
Research has shown additional benefits to using carob,vi making it beneficial for digestion, lowering cholesterol levels, fat metabolism and weight reduction, reducing the chance of osteoporosis, and strengthening the immune system
As a medicinal herb, carob has been used to treat diarrhea, heartburn, persistent coughing and morning sickness or nausea in pregnancy. In times of famine, it has been a nutritious food source.vii
All round, carob is better than chocolate. Isn’t it time you made the switch?

The anti-oxidant power of blueberries has been shown to be particularly useful in stabilizing brain function and protecting the neural tissue from oxidative stress. The riper the berries the more anti-oxidant power they contain.

Scientists Discover That Plants Communicate via Symbiotic Root Fungi

Human arrogance has always assumed we are evolutionarily superior to plants, but it appears that modern science may be the antidote to this egocentric view.

Researchers in the UK have discovered an extensive underground network connecting plants by their roots, serving as a complex interplant communication system... a “plant Internet,” if you will.

Tips for Adding Mycorrhizae to Your Own Garden

Now that the secret’s out, companies are beginning to offer mycorrhizae to home gardeners and commercial farmers alike. If you have an organic garden, adding a sprinkle of mycorrhizae, along with good organic fertilizer, is a great way to ensure your garden will be the envy of your neighborhood.
For tips on how to use this in your garden at home, I recommend watching the “smiling gardener” video above. It’s important to remember that mycorrhizae must be applied to the roots of your plants. If you just sprinkle the granules onto the soil and they don’t make contact with the roots within about 48 hours, they’ll die and your efforts will be wasted. So, you can make a “tea” out of it and apply it as a spray, or you can rub a small amount directly onto the roots of your transplant. But it has to come into direct contact with some part of the root.

Healthy Meal Ideas

Making healthy eating choices is not easy. Often, we eat the wrong food, in the wrong quantity, at the wrong time.
One of the main issues food can cause is mucus and pus forming in the body. All meat and dairy products cause the body to produce mucus, and should be avoided.

Epsom Salts in the Garden

Magnesium is a nutrient needed by plants for many growing processes.

Probably the most important role magnesium plays is in chlorophyll production. Chlorophyll, which absorbs light and changes it into chemical energy in a process called photosynthesis, relies on magnesium. Magnesium is at the heart of the chlorophyll molecule.

Magnesium is also needed for making plant sugars, moving starches in the plant, oil and fat formation, and the uptake of other nutrients, amongst other important processes.Plants need adequate amounts of magnesium to grow properly and produce normal fruits and seeds.

Epsom salts can be used to provide magnesium when soils are deficient of this nutrient. However, it should not be used if your soil is not magnesium deficient because too much magnesium can cause a mineral imbalance, affecting the absorption of other nutrients.

Kale is King

Are you growing kale in your garden? If not, perhaps you should be. Growing kale can supply you with enough fresh leaves for delicious salads and side dishes throughout the summer. This deeply green, leafy vegetable is a nutritional powerhouse that should be a regular part of our diets.

Nutrient dense
One cup of raw kale supplies more than the required amounts of the vitamins A, C and K and more calcium than an equal weight of 1% milk. It’s rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants and provides a variety of other vitamins and minerals.
