I just started this blog, hoping that my comments might start a conversation with friends and fans of literature for young people.  Let me know what's on your mind!

Q:  Do you prefer main characters to be boys or girls?  Does it make a difference to you?

A:  It doesn't make a difference to me in reading, as long as the character is interesting and right for the adventure.  I've written books with both girls and boys as the protagonist, and I never make a conscious choice.   Usually my main characters appear fully formed for the story, and once the idea pops into my head it would be hard for me to change the gender of that character.  My favorite kind of characters, whether I'm experiencing a story through their eyes or writing their stories myself, are always characters who are adventurous, have a sense of humor and has flaws.  It's really no fun reading about perfect people, I can't relate to that, can you?
