Vistas with a foreground setting like this crescent beach with waves lapping on the shoreline are very relaxing.   They take my mind far away and clear it from tension. Every part of my body relaxes.  Thank you Derek.

Good to know +Al Griffin .......... my son Jason owns a Norton motorcycle. He has told me that BC offers some fantastic rides.  I can tell you that Vancouver has changed dramatically, mostly in good ways, since the 1980's.

This monument is to Portuguese Joe, a man who travelled from the Azores Islands to what was to become Vancouver. The official installation of the monument happened yesterday.

Georgette and I were out on a bicycle ride when we came across the monument. It was sheer chance that descendants of Portuguese Joe were visiting there when we arrived. We had a very interesting chat with them.

The second-to-last photo shows Portuguese Joe's grandson and his wife. The last photo is of the plaque that gives information about the monument.

At least four times a year, I get together with a small group of men I taught with at Britannia Secondary School, beginning in 1970. We meet in a modest East End restaurant with great food at low prices.

We're a diverse group: proud Canadians of Greek, Italian, Ukrainian German, Irish, and British heritage. Our conversations are loud and punctuated with laughter. I'm the junior member, and will always be treated as such. Today, they let me take their pictures. George (the Greek) took one that included me.

The Museum of Anthropology and its grounds feature works reflecting the culture and art of First Nations peoples of coastal British Columbia. When I visited this place earlier this week, the early evening light was exquisite.

+Frank Elliott ........... you are correct.. the M of A is located on the UBC campus. The First Nations peoples, as we in Canada commonly refer to them, certainly feel a special relationship with the 'natural world'. Many are active in environmental initiatives such as protests against the building of pipelines across British Columbia. As for the lack of writing systems, there is strong evidence that their oral histories are very accurate. They play an important role in land claims cases (oral history evidence is accepted). I've also heard remarkable creation-myth stories that have ancient roots.

+Shiva Sedhai ........ my strong feeling is that people who have visited Nepal and enjoyed its beauty and the warm hospitality of its people should step up and help in some way, financially or otherwise.

Introduction
G+ Circles: If you add me to one of your circles , I will circle you back if your profile includes your photo and provides a reasonable amount of information about you and your interests. I enjoy seeing the work of other photographers, including newcomers to this medium.

I will not circle those who conceal or misrepresent their identity,  or who are trying to sell me something, or who show hatred towards others.

If you comment on one of my photos, I will make every effort to comment back. I love receiving +1's on my photos but don't always have the time to acknowledge them.

I grew up in West Vancouver and attended the University of British Columbia, where I honored in Political Science. I've lived in Vancouver all my life. I am in my second marriage - to a beautiful, wonderful woman and soul mate, Georgette. We married in 1997.

Since my retirement, Georgette and I have traveled to Europe, India and Nepal, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Morocco, Turkey, and most recently, South America (Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Brazil, and Argentina.)

My passions include writing, movies and music of all kinds, browsing the Internet, cycling, hiking, and keeping fit at the local community centre. I am also chairperson of the Vancouver School Board Archives and Heritage Committee (a voluntary group.)

I became interested in photography at an early age. During Grades 11 and 12, I was lead photographer for my school's Student Annual, which required that I develop and print all my photos. My cameras included a Rolleiflex (Tessar) and later, 2 Leicaflexes.

I bought my first digital camera, an Olympus, in 2005, and was instantly hooked. I especially enjoyed being able to PhotoShop my photos. It was like having my darkroom back, only better! I have used a Nikon D800 since 2012. However, during travels to other countries, I continue to rely on my trusty Nikon D80. My cameras are my constant companions.

Sharing photos through Picasa and G+ has opened my eyes to many new ways of approaching photography. I've learned a lot from other photographers, and I believe I've become a better photographer as a result.
