Interesting question that I hadn't thought about. You're right though - new query parameters as a token will cause varnish to be less effective at image caching as it's no longer just 1 resource, it's potentially infinite resources.
A couple of quick tests here prove that much - however using a few different anonymous browsers the token parameters are shown as the same which to me seems to show that the page is getting stored in varnish, with images.

Because varnish is storing both the href to the cached image and the cached image itself it seems to do just fine with it but I'd need to do a deeper dive to ensure that was the case!

[I think I'm right in saying (haven't checked core code) that the token only matters for first time imagecache derivative creation so any repeated view may use any token]

Meeting notes for those not able to attend the October meeting.

The October DrupalACT meeting was held on 2nd of October at AMA House in Barton. View the DrupalACT meeting presentation, https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8nDhrVOtCugNnlxNk1mTmEzSlk

Presentation
Adam Malone, http://drupal.org/user/1295980 (AMA, http://ama.com.au) presented Drupal and Node.js: Push your site, http://www.adammalone.net/post/drupal-and-nodejs-push-your-site

Presentation slides are available and an invitation to continue the discussion on Adam's website, http://www.adammalone.net/post/drupal-and-nodejs-push-your-site

Adam explained the background, theory and delivered a practical example of Node.js / Drupal integration with http://nodejs.adammalone.net

We learnt about the difference between blocking and non-blocking services, the ability for node.js to respond to events, push data direct to users in real time resulting in a much more interactive experience. Examples of where these are used today include Facebook, website chat, GooglePlus and other sites where real time information is essential.
