Shabbat shalom! This week we will read from Parashat Vayeshev. In this Torah portion, Jacob favors Joseph, and this angers Joseph’s brothers. Joseph has dreams where he predicts reigning over his brothers. The brothers decide to sell Joseph into slavery in Egypt. Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute and sleeps with her father-in-law Judah. Potiphar’s wife tries to seduce Joseph, and when he rejects her, she accuses him of trying to rape her, and has him sent to prison. In prison, Pharaoh’s baker and butler have dreams, and Joseph interprets them correctly.
Thought question: The name of this parasha, Vayeshev, means “and he settled” referring to the fact that Jacob settled with his family back in the land of Canaan. He had no idea what was going to happen to his family in the subsequent years. So this begs the question, if we don’t know the future, can we ever feel settled?

Shabbat Shalom! This week we read from Parashat Vayetze. Jacob has a dream with angels going up and down a ladder from earth to heaven. God appears before Jacob, renewing the covenant that God had made with Abraham. Jacob sees Rachel, Laban's daughter, tending to sheep and wishes to marry her. Laban tricks Jacob into marrying his eldest daughter, Leah, after seven years of labor. In exchange for another seven years of work, Jacob is allowed to marry Rachel. Jacob has many sons with Leah, but Rachel is unable to conceive. Finally, God blesses Rachel, and she has a son, whom she names Joseph.
Thought Question: Have you ever been in a place where you recognized God's presence after you left?

Thought Question: What does it mean to fast for a destroyed Temple and the loss of sovereignty when we have the sovereign state of Israel? What are we mourning?
