Understandable, though I'd question that you "face this same challenge every day across a variety of media" because, outside of gaming, it's very "in" now to have homosexual characters and relationships, especially on TV. How well written they are, I can't say. I only know one gay man well and I don't really watch TV.
Personally, I'm very into story and character writing, so details matter. I have no issue with a character like Zevran or Steve Cortez from Mass Effect 3, but do have an issue when they alter a preexisting character like Anders.
Additionally, while I don't remember how it went down, only having played through DA2 once and that several years ago, several people have commented to me on how strange it was handled, which might be what Joe is getting at.
