Last year around this time, I saw this shot coming. The clouds... their placement... oh, I knew it was gonna be good.
I threw on my snowshoes and hustled out to the best spot... on a bridge crossing that little creek you see at the lower left. I set up my tripod, got everything set up.. the sunset was peaking. Joy!
[She hits the pause button]
Last year was record-breaking in the snowfall department.
Each storm dropped several feet... and also changed where you perceived the edges of things. Like bridges over creeks. Instead of the edge of the bridge, you might be standing on a cornice of snow. Soft snow. And yet imagine that you have something solid beneath you.
[She presses play again]
I stepped around the tripod leg to reach the shutter button and...
Felt the snow give way beneath me, fell over backwards and landed on my back in the slushy creek below. It all happened so fast! I heard a little girl screaming in the distance. Poor thing, I thought, she sounds terrified! Someone should help her! Then I realized it was me. Wow, that's embarrassing. I wondered if anyone heard. Lying alone in the slush (think 7-11 slushy), I hoped no one heard. Then realized that really, no one WOULD hear - and I'd better get up out of the muck - and quick!
I looked up.
My brand new Canon 5D Mark II was still on the tripod... that now had one leg dangling above me. I gasped... It was about to join me in the drink!
I hauled myself to my soggy feet and tried to climb out.
But the snow was too soft and I keep sliding back.
So I got on my hands and knees and just kept clambering and clawing until I surfaced.
Staggered to the tripod. Reset it.
I was gonna GET this freakin' sunset if it killed me... even IF it had already peaked while I foundered on my back in a creek full of slush.
I will NOT be daunted!
Hands shaking, I pressed the shutter.
Snap, snap and... snap. (it was, after all, Canon)
Got it. Take THAT, Powers That Be!!
Proving once again, you really don't have to go far from home for an adventure.
