Google will “allow” you a single custom URL of their choice. You cannot change it. You MUST give them an SMS number. Fuck this shit.

So, they're using SMS to authenticate you so some bad guy can't claim a URL with your name in it. They use SMS for 2 factor authentication in general - FWIW, I've never had Google SMSpam me. In fact, the only Google originated SMSs I have received are ones I initiated for 2 factor auth. That being said, they did just announce some new G+ features yesterday involving SMS. So, YMMV.

Is there a popular Android app that uses up tons of memory? I'd like to exercise something in a low-memory situation. Profiling tools say everything is hunky-dory, but I've got tons of heap here.

So Exception.getMessage() can be null. That's real helpful there, Java. Android's Log then crashes trying to log the null message. Nice work, Android team. Golf claps all around.

The Intel images and native GPU support make the emulator far easier to use, but it still takes over a minute to push each build to the emulator on a Mac. Devices, a few seconds.

So I'm back to using a bunch of phones again :D

Turns out installing the Charles Proxy certificate on modern Android phones is as simple as loading http://charlesproxy.com/charles.crt on the device. Works in the emulator too!

Hugely helpful for developing mobile applications with a server, especially if HTTPS is involved.

This makes Nexus 10 more tempting... $400 on Google Play.

+Android Developers! If you want to test your UI in pretty much all environments, a Nexus 10 is all you need.

There are two really useful commands you should know: "adb shell am display-size" and "adb shell am display-density".

These two commands will tell an attached device to emulate a display resolution or density other than the native display properties of the device. You can tell either property to reset by telling it "reset" as the resolution or density argument.

What this means is that with one high resolution, high density device like the Nexus 10, you can simulate the environment of just about any other Android device you'll care about for basic UI testing. The resource system will give you the appropriate resources for the adjusted Configuration and you can check each different device class you want to support in minutes.

Yes, Eclipse. OpenGL Trace View. That's what I always want to default to in my Console. Thank you so very much.

What are the best Android developer conferences? I'm looking at http://www.bigandroidbbq.com and http://www.andevcon.com

Don't say GoogleIO. It has to be something normal people can plan to register for and attend, not a lottery ticket.
