Introduction
The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago serves as the Seventh Federal Reserve District, an economically diverse region that includes all of Iowa and most of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. The Seventh District has a large national share of many important economic sectors. The Chicago Fed has a head office in Chicago and a branch office in Detroit. We also sponsor Money Smart Week® in April of each year throughout our district as well as in many states across the country.

The National Financial Conditions Index for April 11 shows us that overall conditions have remained steady. Credit conditions tightened slightly, while risk and leverage were stable. In additions, financial conditions continue to be looser than one would expect from economic conditions.

Seventh District Beige Book report for March: Growth in economic activity in the Seventh District picked up in March, and contacts generally maintained their optimistic outlook for 2014. Growth in consumer and business spending increased. Growth in manufacturing production was moderate, while growth in construction and real estate activity was modest. Credit conditions were little changed on balance. Cost pressures remained mild. Corn, soybean, milk, hog, and cattle prices moved higher. Full report:

The winter of 2013-14 was a tough one for many parts of the country. Not surprisingly, freight traffic was disrupted by the ice, storms and frigid temperatures. During this same time, freight prices also spiked. Were those spikes due to the weather, or an indication of a longer term trend?
