NASCLA Exam Sets National Standard for Contractor Licensure

Formerly a resident of Charlotte, NC, Richard Schwartz now leads as president and chief operating officer of Village Park Homes in Hilton Head, SC. Richard Schwartz recently passed the licensing exam of the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agency.

The NASCLA was formed in 1962. It is comprised of state and local licensing agencies as well as firms and associations related to the construction industry. The organization works toward the health and safety of communities throughout the nation by providing unified standards for contractors and those associated with the construction industry.

The NASCLA Accredited Examination for Commercial General Building Contractors was first administered in 2009. Though the NASCLA is not a national test and those that pass the exam need to meet their state’s specific requirements, various states, including NC, use the test as their standard for licensure. The test assists industry professionals across the nation by reducing redundant licensing requirements.

After passing the exam, scores are entered into the National Examination Database, a process that allows professionals to transfer their scores to different states easily. The exam tests contractors on topics such as planning and estimating, project management, safety, site construction, various materials and methods of construction, and other relevant matters. The standards set forth in the NASCLA exam help states to ensure that contractors and construction professionals who earn licensure in their jurisdiction are knowledgeable and properly qualified.
