Last weekend +Levi Clark shot photos of the Memex #001 and I hope that these photos help me find a place for it in a public collection, museum, or hackerspace that will love and care for it as I do.

I can't express how grateful I am to have the time and resources to work with Sparks to create this piece of retroactive history.  I believe that Vannevar Bush would have been thrilled to see his thought experiment come to life.

After trying several label types for the Memex #001, I ended up cutting black plastic to look like it was molded using older techniques.

The Memex #001 is now creating and traversing hypertext trails as described in "As We May Think"! Coding for such a control system and hypertext is different than coding for the modern web.

In these pictures you can see the paper labels I'm using during development, but when I have finalized each button's function I will emboss an aluminum label for it.

As of this day, January 4, 2013 at 13:50 PST, the hardware of the Memex #001 is complete!

All that remains is to polish the control software, create the tutorials and demo mode, write up the maintenance documentation, and emboss the final aluminum labels.

Since this wasn't a commissioned piece, I'm not sure where it will end up.  Will it be a showpiece for a collector, a display at a museum, a piece of corporate art, someone's actual desk, or gather dust in storage?

No matter which way the winds take it, I'm grateful and satisfied to have made it.

The exterior of the #memex is complete!

There are a few minor pieces of interior construction which I aim to finish this week, and then it's just a simple matter of programming.

The kid and I cut, drilled, glued, and mounted the #memex  drawer fronts so we're that much closer to completing all the construction tasks.

For skill transfer, these big projects are great.  She learned about power tool safety, wood glue, magnetism, and the exact time it takes for epoxy to set between tiny fingers.

Ordered a Google Glass. First task: Write an app for it that acts in conjunction with the +Memex #001 as described in "As We May Think". Now meets then.

Today was sort of a big day for the Memex #001 project as the kid and I soldered and then installed the control panel into the desk for the first time.  It's alive!

The Big Grid Of Buttons is particularly satisfying, but the jog lever comes a close second.

I also updated the project page with a bit more info about the build.
