A TOUR OF JEWISH NEWARK
Celebrating the 350th Anniversary of
Newark, New Jersey
May 15, 2016 12-5pm
. . . . . .
Sites to be visited include, Ahavas Sholom, built in 1922-23, is the only active Newark synagogue utilizing its original building. The sanctuary showcases a historic ark, built in 1872-73 and relocated to Newark from New York City in 1929. B'nai Jeshurun, Newark's first Jewish congregation was founded in 1848; its 1914-15 green-domed building now serves a Baptist church. Oheb Shalom, Newark's third Jewish congregation, founded in 1860, dedicated its masonry synagogue in 1884. Under restoration by Greater Newark Conservancy, portions of the building reopened in December 2015 for the first time since 1993. And finally, a drive through through the Weequahic neighborhood will include the childhood home and high school of Philip Roth. The tour will leave from the Newark Museum, built through the generosity of Louis Bamberger at 12 noon where there is parking available for a fee. The tour will end at 5 pm.
