6th Annual Atlanta Skeptics Star Party Tonight!

I'll be hosting a very special event tonight, the 6th Annual pre-+Dragon Con Charity Star Party put on by the Atlanta Skeptics!

To celebrate the life of astronomer, educator and skeptic Jeff Medkeff, tonight's event will be raising money for charity while simultaneously educating about science!

Even if you aren't in Atlanta to attend the event, we'll be broadcasting it live, thanks to +Tim Farley and his crew on the ground. RSVP to the event below.

Special thanks to +Stuart Forman for providing the stills of Comet "Jacques" that I was able to animate for this breathtaking animation of the comet that can be seen in Cassiopeia right now!

The +Virtual Star Party returns!

After a month off, we're back with your favorite show that shows off the night sky!

Join your hosts +Scott Lewis and +Fraser Cain as they gather up their phenomenal group of citizen astronomers from across the globe in order to share their view of the cosmos live in a Google+ Hangout On Air!

As always, we'll be providing live streams of the sky via telescopes so long as the weather is permitting, however we've added something NEW to the show!

Since we know that the weather doesn't always cooperate with us and our desire to share live views, we are going to be featuring and showcasing recent astrophotography taken by the team!

This will allow for us to (hopefully) NEVER have to cancel a show because of weather. On top of that, it means that even more can join in on the fun in sharing their view of the Universe.

If you'd like to submit your own work to the show, just fill out the form and upload your image here: http://goo.gl/6kQord

In addition to Fraser, Scott, and the astronomers are PhD astronomers discussing and explaining the amazing space science and astronomy that's being viewed in the telescopes. We'll even take requests and answer questions left in the comments.

To make a suggestion, ask a question or just say "hi" to the team, please leave your comments below in the Google+ event, through any of the shares of the live show, or on Twitter using the hashtag
#StarParty .

Also, The VSP is now on Twitter and Facebook! Give us a follow and/or a like!

Sixth Annual  Star Party!

Before  for the past few years, a charity star party event has been held in the honor of Jeff Medkeff. Two years ago, we've been privileged with being able to take part in this by hosting a new segment that allows us to bring in views of the Universe from across the globe, even if the skies are cloud-covered in Atlanta.

We'll be doing it again, this Friday. Join many of our familiar VSP astronomers, +Scott Lewis and perhaps some special guests as we celebrate the life of Jeff and come together to advocate for skepticism and education in science for all of society!

Details are below in the event. Please RSVP and share with your streams!

#Space   #Astronomy   #VSP   #Skepticism   #YouTube

The Atlanta Star Party is held every year in conjunction with DragonCon Skeptrack in honor of Jeff Medkeff the late astronomer and skeptic. It raises money for charity while educating about science. And through Google Hangouts on Air, you can participate from your home as well!  http://atlantastarparty.com/ #ATL   #StarParty   #DragonCon   #Skeptrack
This Hangout On Air is hosted by Tim Farley. The live video broadcast will begin soon.

I didn't see any other good spots to post so I'll just post this here... You guys really need to consider going back to the weekly vsp. This new method is just not a good idea on any level. I don't understand how you can cut your content down by 3/4 and expect everyone to go through the trouble of figuring out when the monthly meeting is... I feel like you guys had a really good thing going and just completely took it for granted and failed to make it clear as to when to expect the new vsp to take place. It's just very frustrating. I have yet to see a vsp live since the ending of the original setup of a weekly vsp back in early spring...

They should host it at a club. That would be a trip. I would go for sure then. Then you could have a dance party after.

Will you join the world to celebrate our view of the Universe under #OneSky

Hello Space Fans!

We live in a world where there are countless borders built between us, both physically and socially. However, we have one sky that unites us all.

To celebrate the #OneSky  we all share, we are teaming up with a groups of international astronomers on 9 May 2014 to simply go outside and observe our beautiful Universe.

There are many local events being set up globally, but if you're unable to attend one, that's okay! Simply going outdoors and taking a few moments to look up at the moon and stars is a fantastic reminder of how we are one species sharing one planet and one sky.

Share with us your experiences using the hash tag #OneSky ! Whether you have some profound cosmic poetry you'd like to share or photographs of people gathering around to look up into the Cosmos, we're looking forward to see you all celebrate together.

You may notice that this event appears to last for two days, that's because 9 May is not merely a 24 hour event, globally. This gives everyone the opportunity to celebrate and share with us their experience whenever it is the 9th of May in their part of the world.

As details of local events come in, we will be updating information and directions on www.knowthecosmos.com/onesky

If you would like to participate in a local event, please contact us at onesky@knowthecosmos.com

This event is working in tandem with the Facebook event created by +Henna Khan, which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/668846526486099/

Keep Looking Up!

Look through multiple telescopes, live!
Introduction
This is the official page for the Virtual Star Party - a weekly live Google+ Hangout. We connect live telescopes into a Google+ Hangout and explain the science behind the live images.

If you don't have the gear, or bad weather, join us right here on Google+.

We're always looking for new astronomers to help showcase the sky. Email +Fraser Cain at info@universetoday.com or +Scott Lewis at scott@knowthecosmos.com if you'd like to participate.
