After a year of having my own business, I can agree with everyone of these points about the reality of being an entrepreneur.

I don't agree with all of Max's negative points about paying hourly but I do agree with all of his points about paying per project.

From my own experience of having a consulting business and having to bid for projects at a fixed cost you do look to optimize in these areas in order to get new projects and make money from them:

1. Getting the project completed as quickly as possible
2. Making the software as error-free as possible, so they can move on to the next project and do not have to always support old projects
3. Reusing as much code as they possibly can, so the project gets done quickly
4. Stick within their expertise area, so they can accurately gauge quoted project price

I think we may also be talking about apples and oranges in regards to the type of work we are doing. For the small marketing websites I have been working on that range from $2 to $5k and sometimes $5 to $10k are pretty well defined and the functionality is usually uniform because it's built on a standard CMS. Most of the time the only custom work is with the design. So estimating fixed prices isn't hard to do.

I also found that clients got used to fixed prices because of graphic design work in the past and they expected the same when it came to web design.

I totally agree with you that any custom development work, like the work you and Tim do, should be billed at an hourly rate and that's what I try to do with my projects when they get very customized.

I totally agree with that. AND, emailing you everytime someone posts another comment is kind of crazy. It makes sense, but doesn't at the same time. Overload!

One more meeting to go today and still catching up on work. Going to be a long weekend. Hopefully, it will smooth out by next week.

Gotcha, wouldn't the post just disappear down the stream anyway once you muted the comments?

I'm seriously considering the Droid 3 with Verizon. Does anybody have it? Is the battery life and keyboard any good?

I've come to a similar mindset over the past 2 weeks of working remotely while vacationing with the family. You can't let the small stresses of trying to build a business bring you down. You have to keep your focus on the big picture.

Wow! Never really thought about it this way - at least consciously. I'm definitely going to start paying closer attention to my BPP.
