Nicely visual explanation of submarine cables, and the follow-on video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VioC059uMVk) explains fiber optics.

Very happy that Cloud Spanner is now available to any GCP customer. Wired's take below, GCP blog post here:

Good weekend read on how recognition effects are complicated. But on a more basic level, how during a war maybe you don't want to be a figher pilot: "In an average month, 3.3% of pilots died. After two years of service, half the low-scoring pilots would have been killed. Amongst the better-performing pilots, only one-quarter would have survived." (The graph below calls it "exit"...economists' euphemisms.)

Everyone talks about IoT security....here's a particularly shocking example (pun not intended).

Every IoT device should be updateable and have strong security. Android for Things (in preview now) has security and updateability built in, as a service, so device makers don't have to write code for it. (Right now it's not ready for a device as low-power as a pace maker, but over time it will hopefully get there.)

Interesting article (short and well written) about why there are so few women at the top levels of chess, with a (to me) surprisingly clear answer. You need to read the article yourself to find out why, but here's a tidbit quote:

"Other results from our study show that men also modify their behaviour when playing against women. Given two opponents of equal ability and two identical board positions, men resign later when they play against a woman. "

Tidbit from this excellent quake blog: how long do earthquakes last? Well, it depends how long the rupture is. The rupturing process travels at roughly 3000mph so if you have a 30 mile rupture that takes 3600/100 = 36 seconds. (I'm probably trivializing the science behind it a bit but it's a very visual way to think about it.)

Google has been carbon neutral since 2007, and next year we'll be powered by 100% renewable energy as our newest wind and solar farms come online.
