1 ROYAL TERRACE are proud to present an exhibition by Glasgow-based artist and writer Laurence Figgis.

Figgis has for some time been concerned with the exploration of literary forms and ideas in drawing and painting. For this exhibition, he will show a series of works related to his collage-novel Blonda, a thrilling hybrid of romantic historical fiction, pagan mythology and dystopian speculative literature.

His aim with this fiction is, on the one hand, to dramatise the equivalence of collage (as a physical, and now increasingly virtual medium) to anachronism (a form of temporal and ideological displacement of images). It is, on the other, to tell a boldly sentimental story of love, loss, jealousy and political ambition unfolding in a world that is at once magical and bureaucratic (or magical because it is bureaucratic).

The works derive their humour from an excessive application of the logic of the material world to the matters both theological and transcendent; here all of nature and superstition are grasped in terms relative to the trivialities of fashion, the urban psyche and the mass-produced commodity.

Laurence Figgis lectures in Fine Art, Painting and Printmaking at The Glasgow School of Art. His recent exhibitions include Hugs n Fun-Fun at the Glasgow Project Room and No Line, No Wave at Graven Images, Glasgow (curated by Briggs and Cole).

Preview: Sunday 29.03.15, 5pm to 8pm.
Open: Saturday – Sunday, 12pm to 5pm.
Further viewings arranged by appointment.

1 Royal Terrace are proud to present our third solo exhibition; an installation by Glasgow-based artist Rachel Levine.

In her practice Levine is interested in exploring how power structures and ‘empirical’ versions of history affect our readings of objects, artifacts, architecture and the built environment. Working predominantly in sculptural assemblage and installations, Levine uses objects and materials as signifiers to create narrative environments.

For her show at 1 Royal Terrace Levine draws on her experience of a recent residency in Beirut, Lebanon, to create an immersive installation dealing with the difficulty of physical movement within the city. Utilising new casts, text works and an architectural alteration of the very exhibition space the work will explore the conflicting tensions and energies experienced in Beirut, while also ruminating on the universal problem of connection to place.

Rachel Levine received her BA(Hons) in Fine Art: Sculpture from Glasgow School of Art in 2013. Since then she has won a number of awards including the Bram Stoker Medal, the Glasgow Visual Artist Mentoring Award and the Skinny Art Prize, as well as a residency from the Scottish Sculpture Workshops. Her most recent exhibitions were the Royal Scottish Academy’s 'New Contemporaries 2014', 'Vernissage' at the Royal Standard and 'Dear Green' at ZKU, Berlin.

Preview: Sunday 09.03.14 from 4pm to 8pm.
Open: 15-16.03.14 and 22-23.03.14, Sat-Sun from 12pm to 5pm
Further viewings arranged by appointment.

1 Royal Terrace are proud to present a solo show by Glasgow-based artist Nick Thomas.

In an attempt to engage with contemporary technology Nick works with open source programming alongside so-called ‘new media,’ as well as more dated technologies and mechanical constructions, whilst repeatedly referring back to art history. Simultaneously sculptural and time-based, his installations set up rhythmic relationships between sound, light, object and image.

For his exhibition at 1 Royal Terrace, Nick is installing new sound works, video and sculptural pieces, drawing on high frequency trading, the archiving of physical objects through internet databases and the co-option and dispersal of the avant-garde in a contemporary media landscape. To accompany the exhibition there will be a workshop/conversation event; date TBA.

Nick Thomas received his BA(Hons) in Fine Art: Painting & Printmaking from Glasgow School of Art in 2012. He has since exhibited in several group exhibitions, co-curated the collaborative programme Ouroboros and taken part in a residency at Hospitalfield Arts. He is currently involved in artist-run initiatives including 2|1|4|1, Transmission Gallery and Glasgow Open House Art Festival.

Preview: Sunday 09.02.14 from 4pm to 8pm.
Open: 15-16.02.14 and 22-23.02.14, Sat-Sun from 12pm to 5pm

1 Royal Terrace are proud to present our premier exhibition; a solo show by Glasgow-based artist, Helen Shaddock.

Shaddock is known for her colourful and playful installations in which she explores form, colour and texture, using processes that allow order and chaos to collide. Adopting a hands-on approach to the use of materials, Shaddock’s work moves effortlessly between painting and the three-dimensional while being mindful of the work’s context and audience.

For her exhibition at 1 Royal Terrace, Shaddock is producing sizable site-specific work. To accompany the exhibition an 'artist in conversation' event will be held on 19.01.14, at 2pm (numbers limited, please email us to book a space).

Helen Shaddock received her BA(Hons) in Fine Art:Sculpture and Environmental Art from Glasgow School of Art in 2008. She regularly exhibits her work in both solo and group exhibitions, and earlier this year she completed a residency at Market Gallery. As an active member of the Glasgow Visual Art community, Shaddock has considerable experience of working within different art organizations in a number of capacities.

Preview: Sunday 12.01.14 from 4pm to 8pm.
Open: 18-19.01.14 and 25-26.01.14, Sat-Sun from 12pm to 5pm
