Quick check in...How's it going? Take a minute and let us all know how things are looking in your class with making CRWP work for you and your new group of students. Where are you in the process? Has anyone done anything that has gone well (or failed miserably)?

Folder of improv handouts for those interested. A great way to build community and start conversation at the beginning of the year!

Woosh improv directions:
You add various moves. Each time you add a possible new move you do a round of woosh all the wY around the circle first after that every player can choose which move to do. Here are se possible moves. You can add more, mKe up your own too.

Whoosh- pass "whoosh" to the person on your right With both hands
Whish-- pass "whish" to the person I your left with both hands
Zap- pass "zap" to someone not next to you with both hands
Tunnel- three people after the tunnel turn their bodies to the right and the fourth person continues
Who's that?- pass "who's that?" Outside the circle. Everyone in circle responds "hi grandma!" Person who passed "who's that" then passes a whoosh to the right after grandma is greeted
Boink- pass "boink" to the person on your left by turning to them saying "boink" and crossing arms like an x. That person must send a "whish" to the left

I've been bugged about the "culture of argument" language from crwp. I wasn't sure if it was my understanding of "argument" (like, perhaps they intended it to be something different from what I was interpreting it to be), but an important part of teaching writing is having a classroom that builds a culture of writers. It's this culture that has made the Writing Project so important in my (and many teachers) lives. It's this culture that enables students to develop identities as writers, and value both the power and process of writing as well as the value of other writers who make up that community with them. The demo today led by +Lucy Arnold +Jana White  and +Melisa Leigh, combined with the conversation I had with +Amanda O'Brien  made me think about how more important than any of this argument, text set, mini-unit stuff are the lives of young people in our classroom and culture that is created through a lot of things, argument being the least of them.

This is Amanda. She is aware that her beliefs, and everyone elses, are part of ideologies already existing in the world. Be like Amanda.
