Profile: Writer, translator Gazi Saiful Islam by Rubiya Jahan on Friday, January 21, 2011 at 12:31am https://www.facebook.com/gsaifulislam Early life: Gazi Saiful Islam prominent poet, writer and translator of Bangladesh. He came off a farmer’s family, in an ancient village named Purannagar, in the district of Mymensingh. He has four brothers and four sisters. He is elder of them. He started his educational life in Bowla high school, Netrekona Government College. And lastly he earned his Master’s degree in Economics from Ananda Mohan University College, Mymensingh, which established-1908 by Ananda Mohan Bose. It’s one of the very famous Colleges in Bangladesh. Great poet and thinker Rabindranath Tagore came to visit this college 16 January 1926. It was a very important day in the history of Mymensingh. Started writing: Mr. Gazi started writing and publishing short stories for nearly ten years. First collection, 20 stories are ready for publications in near future. In the story case his language is very direct and vernacular. But in the case of poems, his language full of mystical and eloquent. In his poems human life used to come as a temporary existence. Like a drops of rain or dew. But his novels, as Dhakar Rat, Manoby Shawrgo have great details. His late mother Begum Jaigonnesa’s ideology is his life’s Ideology. His first written literary matter was a poem named ‘My Country’ published first in a weekly Newspaper, named‘‘ Bangler Chashi’’ 1984. Later in 1986, dated 14 December, intellectuals martyrdom day he published a chora named, ‘shadhinota’ in the daily Azad’s Mukoler Mahfil. Now he writes in the daily Newspapers’ weekly supplements and Literary Magazines of Bangladesh. He is mostly interested in the world literature & philosophy. Especially the philosophy of Hegel, Karl Marx, Albert Camus, Bertrand Resell, Jacques Derrida and Fockoln. Literary Works: Mr. Gazi Saiful credited eight books. Four of them translated and five of them original. Gazi translated many great interviews. As example, the last interview of Saddam Hussein with Dan Rather broadcasted CBS television, just before the second gulf war. He translated many interviews of the Noble Prize winner poets and novelists. As example, great Russian novelist Boris Pasternak and Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Bengali poet, writer Rabindranath Tagore with Albert Einstein and H.G. Wells, Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, Iris dramatist novelist. Samuel Beckett, South African novelist Nadine Gordimer and J. M. Coetzee, German poet, novelist Gunter Grass, Herta Muller, Latin American novelist Gabriel García Márquez, Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz, Turkey poet Nazim Hikmet, novelist Orhan Pamuk, Yassar Kemal, Peruvian novelist Mario Vergas Llosa, American novelist Toni Morrison, three times Pulitzer Prize winner Norman Mailer, Booker prize winner Salman Rushdi, Edward P. Jones, Isabel Alende, Katherine Camus and more eminent persons. Political persons whose interviews were selected for translation, as Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Princess Diana, boxer Mohamad Ali, Economist Amerta Sen, Dr. Mohamad Unos. He translated many short stories by world noted writers as Indian Amrita Pritam, Kushwant Singh, Bhisham Shani, Ruskin Bond, Japans Kazuo Ishiguro, New Zealandian Katherine Mansfield and more.
