I think there are serious issues that need to be dealt with before using hydrogen as an energy storage or transport system would be viable. I don't think that it is impossible that hydrogen could end up being extensively used for some applications, but it will require some major advancements.
As a fuel for cars hydrogen could possibly make sense if the energy required to make hydrogen, and put it into a form that is safe and compact, and transport it to where it is needed, was dramatically reduced. As a fuel for homes and industry I just don't see the advantage of hydrogen over locally produced heat and electricity, combined with storage (which could be hydrogen storage if the issues above were dealt with).
I know that many people believe we must make our decision on all these issues sooner rather than later but I see technology as an always moving target. We should decide to do what makes sense at the time that we do it, not under the belief that eventually our decision may turn out to be correct.
