In individual terms there is a saying that goes something like this, "you're only as sick as your secrets." I think it could possibly be added to a macro view. In other words, if individuals live with secrets, they are taking to their grave, chances are they have to live with the fact that they have to safeguard their lies. In that sense, they are always at war with themselves - their innards could possibly be tied up in knots. On a more macro sense - our country has been at war with one regime or group since I was a child...so about 50 years. Cuba, Russia, China, Korea, Vietnam, Iran, Hezbollah, the PLO, the Mujaheddin, AL-Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood, and any country in Latin America that did not adjust themselves to free-market capitalism in the 1980's. Oh yeah, lets not forget Iraq, Afghanistan, and more recently, ISIL.
And now - We the People are the enemy...thanks Orwell.
The secrets the U.S. has kept safeguarded has kept us sick on a global scale and our citizens are suffering as a result - not being able to to differentiate the true from the false, being in full-flight from reality...our life seems to be the only acceptable one. Ed Snowden seems to be a person that has deep information about our counties lack of sympathy or empathy for others. His willingness to open himself up to ridicule and actual harm is inspiring when looked at it from this angle.
And while we remain encapsulated/distracted on Caitlin Jenner, ISIS, Police Brutality, Gay Marriage, Medicinal Marijuana, Gun Rights, Reality TV, The NFL, Domestic Violence, the War on Drugs...ect. A Cabal of a few has taken our country away from "We the People." Thomas Jefferson said it was our (the Citizens) duty to change the power structure once it has out-lived its usefulness. Both at the National level and at the State level.
