The Islam-vs.-secularism formula and the moderate-vs.-radical Islam dichotomy are poor guides for understanding contemporary Turkey.

The renowned novelist Elif Shafak has twice delivered the CK lecture. She has been accused by a pro-government Turkish newspaper of being part of the "international literature lobby" along with Orhan Pamak. In other words, she is accused of being part of a global conspiracy to undermine Turkey!

Geographic focus is Diyarbakir.
The church of Sourp Giragos, in old Diyarbakir, fell into ruins after 1915. A few years ago, the town rebuilt it. “Our grandparents,” the mayor said, “committed wrongs, but we, their grandchildren, will not repeat them.” Credit Photographs by Pari Dukovic

Introduction
The Campagna-Kerven lecture series at Boston University provides a forum for presentations by leading experts--whether journalists, scholars, business leaders, literary talents or other creative artists--on modern Turkey, as well as by promising younger scholars and intellectuals. Since 1996, the annual lectures have addressed a rich variety of themes on modern Turkish society, culture and politics. Given the increasing importance of Turkey on the global scene, as well as its major role in the Middle East, the Campagna-Kerven lectures are dedicated to fostering informed public debate on questions of the day, as well as improving the public’s knowledge of Turkish Society and politics.
