Today marks the one month anniversary of something I'd rather not celebrate. My father passed away at the age of 81 on August 3, 2015.
His timing sucked as I was in Vegas for my high school reunion that I organized when I got the call that it was time to come see him. He'd laugh and agree that his timing sucked. But, I know he is now out of pain and this brings me some peace -though I still mourn.Thankfully, I was with some of my best friends who were able to arrange my travel (lost my voice thanks to clubbing---something I never do now), pack my suitcase and get me to my flight.
We kids (5 of the 6 of his kids) and our families traveled from around the world to be by his side (3 different continents). We all tried to get there in time to say "Auf Wiedersehen" to the naturalized American citizen from Columbia who raised us in a place we lovingly call 'home', Germany.
Thankfully my siblings and Dad's family were not bothered as I documented Dad's last moments with us as well as the process of that continues afterward---going through his stuff, funeral, all of that.
The small community of Fulton, Missouri, as well as my Dad and his wife's friends and family were absolutely amazing!
I truly thought I was ready for that moment that he'd take his last breath and leave this earthly life. I knew he was ill and was mentally preparing myself for some time. I was only fooling myself.
Though losing my stepmom was so difficult and sad,  I wasn't there. This IS my Dad. The guy who agreed that this chica and her twin sister NEED to be adopted from the Philippines. This is the guy who could be my greatest heartache or greatest cheerleader.
This is what happens when dusk turns to dark but he will live on forever in our hearts and minds.
I love and miss you Dad. I'm glad you did it YOUR way. I'm so glad I was there holding your hand and am comforted with the knowledge that, with that last breath, you are no longer in pain. But I do miss and love you Papa.

On this Memorial Day, let us not forget the sacrifices of those who have served and the loss their loved ones endure today.

"With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day."
