Sawtooth Ideas is the technology startup company I co-founded with Russ Whitney earlier this year. We just released version 1.0 of our first cross-platform software product IdeaRoom, which runs on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
IdeaRoom targets the woodworking industry and transforms woodworking plans from flat 2D documents into more useful and engaging 3D experiences. We built a proprietary 3D graphics engine called EDGE (Enchanted Designs Graphics Engine) that allows non-expert users to easily visualize and manipulate 3D models in domain-specific ways. For woodworking, this includes seeing the project with realistic wood textures, exploding the model to see how all the components fit together, or isolating and measuring individual parts and pieces. In the future, you will also be able to customize the project by resizing, changing parts, and applying new textures.
Our bigger vision is to create domain-specific 3D web, mobile, and desktop applications in many industries that allow anyone to perform functions that might otherwise require expert CAD users, whether it be personalizing products while shopping online, customizing the basic layout or features of your new home, or just clearly understanding how to assemble the product you bought at Ikea.
You can learn more and download IdeaRoom on our website (www.sawtoothideas.com
). The Mac and iOS apps are in the app store. Even if you aren't a woodworker, we'd love to have you check it out and hear your input and ideas on what we've built so far and what we should build in the future. If you see an application of this concept in your industry, please reach out and let me know.
For the technically inclined, here is a list of some technologies we use: Ruby, Rails, REST, Haml, Sass, CoffeeScript, MySQL, OpenGL, C++, C++/CLI, C#, Objective-C, WPF, Cocao.
