My husband and I lived in the Bay Area for 37 years. Many restaurants come and go. I consider Gary Danko the finest restaurant in the entire city. Only Boulevard comes close. Gary knows his food, and he is not only the best chef but completely delightful.
If I were still out there, I would go to Gary Danko once a month. If you have an anniversary OR you plan to propose to your love, do it at Gary Danko in style!
I once told Gary we would come more often but it took one month ahead to get a table there. He said, "if you just drop by around noon of the day you want to come, just tell one of our people at the reception desk, and you will be able to get in! We tried it, and that is true! Congratulations, Gary. You are still Number One!

Gary Danko's "civilized" perennial "favorite" in the Wharf area continues to impress with its "rare" "fine-dining" experience of "luxury without pretense", presenting "spectacular", customizable New American prix fixe menus ("save room for the cheese cart") and "excellent wine pairings" with "flawless" service "so accommodating you feel that anything is possible"; whether you're seated in the "elegant" dining room or at the bar, "everything about" the place is "sublime, or a shade better", which explains why despite the "high" tabs, "it's easier to get into heaven" than score a reservation here.

There's no need to say that this place is expensive. If you're planning to go here, you already know that. But you also know that you're paying for the food, the oh so good food. Their seafood is really my favorite, especially their lobster. I'm also a huge fan of the risotto. My dad got the steak, and while I'm not a red meat kind of girl, that was also fantastic.

Our absolute favorite fine dining restaurant in San Francisco! Everything from the ambiance, menu concept, selection, and expert staff (each one of them) are executed to perfection!

Simply one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. Great place for that special birthday. Attentive service across the board. Food was light, subtle, rich, decadent, delicious, refined, fresh and in deference to the dishwasher, we cleaned the plates clean. Dishes were well portioned and we were stuffed from our four course selection. They asked whether it was a special occasion at reservation and we found it why. They brought out a chef's complimentary chocolate mousse scribed in chocolate with "Happy Birthday" on the plate and petit cookies in all different varieties. And to top it off, more cake for home! Now we understand what fine dining Gary Danko brings to the city. Well worth a visit.

This was my birthday dinner restaurant of choice. Perfect for special occassions. A group of 6 of us went here for my birthday on Oct. 1. We got there a little early and they had our table ready, so we were seated immediately. They got purse hangers for our purses (yay, someone cares about my lovely Kate Spade as well as me!) - and keeping it off the ground chair. We were offer an extensive drink menu with different cocktail for every type of liquor (gin, vodka, bourbon) - so you have a lot of choices in addition to the long wine list. I got a strawberry mojito, which was refreshing.
The menu is a pre-fix menu, you can choose from 3 item, 4 item or 5 items. The best part is that you dont' have to choose any one category. if you wanted all appetizer, you can choose all appetizer, or all meats or seafood. The choice is your! Fabulous!!
They start us all off with a complimentary amuse bouse from the chef, a light cold tomato bisque which was tart and refreshing. I had the Dungness Crab salad w/ melon. Very refreshing start and they give you a lot of fresh crab! My second dish was my absolute fav. I had the Thai coconut shrimp with scallop and lobster in a curry sauce and rice and it was perfect. Everything blended so well! My third course was a pork dish, which while good, did not meet up to the first two opening standard. For my fourth dish, we got a selection of cheeses, which while was good, I wish I had skip. I read that it is a must try (but really only if you are a huge cheese fan!) and for dessert, I got the chocolate souffle, which was done perfectly!
All in all, a beautiful way to celebrate ~ But be prepared to enjoy a nice long dinner. We got in for a 8:30 res, and didn't get out until 11:00.

We came here for my husband's birthday. The food was excellent. Truly, everything we ate was absolutely perfect.
The food wasn't incredibly imaginative, it didn't push any envelopes, so if that's your thing, look elsewhere.
My gripes are small, but they began to add up throughout the night. First, they were not able to seat us at our reservation time, so we had cocktails at the bar, and they brought us a small bite while we waited. No biggie, honestly it wouldn't have bothered me on its own.
Next, we were seated by a couple who took flash pictures throughout the evening. I'm not talking five or six, I am talking over a hundred throughout the meal. I felt this alone was enough to ruin an experience for a lot of people. It was a big turn off. From the restaurant's point of view... those pictures make it on Yelp!, Google+, and Facebook. I get it, it's free marketing. Also, who wants to ask their customers to stop doing something? No one. But at some point you have to find a nice way to say, "no flash photos please.," or what about "please refrain from taking over 20 flash photos throughout your dining experience with Gary Danko." Ok, now I am getting snarky, but you catch my drift.
Throughout the meal, I heard our server deliver the same scripted lines to each table. I could have told him what he was going to say to me every time he delivered something to the table. At a restaurant this caliber, I would expect a more tailored or individualized style of service.
Overall, these are small gripes, but I felt they were valid.
This is a special occasion restaurant, one where even if money were no object, Gary Danko's formal atmosphere doesn't make for every night dining. A few things made what could have been an exceptional experience, a good one. We probably wouldn't have the same experience if we dined here again, but we most likely won't as there are heaps of restaurants to try in San Francisco including several other Michelin rated restaurants. I have no doubt you'll find the food amazing, but I can't guarantee anything else.

This place is phenomenal!!! A friend and I each got the 4 course meal and we shared each of our courses. All the dishes were amazing - I also have to mention, HUGE! For a Michelin starred restaurant, I expect to leave feeling somewhat empty (just because I have a huge appetite), but I left stuffed and extremely happy. I had the crab risotto, scallops (that were on steroids), lamb, and lemon souffle cake. I wish I had the capacity to try a 5th course, but all in all, this is definitely a place I will come again. I do think that although it is pricey, GD is a place I wouldn't mind spending money on. Definitely do try to make reservations in advance since its such a popular, famous restaurant. A+++++++++ from me :)
