I've processed up photos from three weeks in the Ishinca Valley with the School for International Expedition Training. What a great time we all had! SIET Ishinca. 6/8-28/2015

Quick Tip: Lowering on real skinny ropes
The other day Meagan and I were out climbing near Buena Vista, Colorado. We squeezed 8 pitches into a seemingly typical showery spring day. For a variety of reasons, we ended up doing some top-roping on real skinny rope (7.7mm). This is admittedly aggressiv...

Rock Climbing Gear List, Summer 2015
Yours truly, April 2015 on the first ascent of "Low Flying Supercub" (5.10-), Labyrinth Canyon, UT. Jana Collin photo. It is the mark of a great ski season when one can feel fully content with the white and slippery by May 1. If I hung up the skis today, I ...

Comprehensive Overview of Outdoor Communications
It is 2015. We head to the mountains partially to escape technology and the “constant contact” of the smartphone age. We have more communication options in town than ever before. Similarly, we have a ton of options in the backcountry. Just as we carry rain ...

"Lawn" Sale. Spring 2015
I's got stuff to sell. Whatcha want? Let's use Paypal to make the transaction. I'll have to ask that we work around my travel schedule. If you want something and get to me in the next couple days, I can ship it out, if you cover the cost of that. But then i...

Introduction
Jediah Porter is a full-time part-timer.  He works as a mountain guide and for OutdoorGearLab.com and as a substitute teacher.  Guiding work requires an even mix of rock shoes, approach shoes, ice boots, and ski gear.  Off the clock, he climbs and skis.  He engages in binges of mountain biking, canoeing, and trail-running.  He goes by Jed and takes pride in using the right tool for the job, unless he doesn't have that tool.  In which case he improvises.  "If you don't have it, you don't need it".  He has lived most of his adult life in the Eastern Sierra and, among other travels, tries to get to Alaska (for big mountains) and the East Coast (for family) once each year.
