Cold weather brings a set of challenges to the concrete industry that must be accounted for to ensure a strong, durable structure. With proper precautions and planning, these challenges can be overcome. http://blog.kryton.com/?p=6581
Like the warm weather that has come and gone, cold weather brings a set of challenges to the concrete industry that must be accounted for to ensure a strong, durable structure. The speed at which concrete sets and hardens is greatly affected by the temperature of the concrete. Concrete at low temperatures delays the setting of the concrete, which means the strength is also delayed. Furthermore, if concrete is allowed to freeze before reaching ade...

PVC Waterstop has been used on many construction sites throughout the world as it is great at blocking water and relatively inexpensive. However, there are many limitations that can lead to leaking construction joints and details. Stop by booth 25 at the American Concrete Institute’s Fall Convention to learn more. http://blog.kryton.com/?p=6427
One of the technologies used in waterproofing joints is through a PVC Waterstop, also known as the traditional ‘dumbbell’ due to its shape. These plastic sheets are placed across the joint before the concrete is poured to create a physical barrier to block water penetration. This particular type of waterstop relies on the ribs in the design to prevent water from passing through the joint. The PVC waterstop is great for blocking water and relative...

Prof. Adam Neville, the author of what is known as the ‘Concrete Bible’, Properties of Concrete, passed away earlier this month. He left an indelible mark on the industry and will surely be missed. http://blog.kryton.com/?p=6567
As we enter another American Concrete Institute (ACI) Fall Convention, I always look back on all the previous years (evidenced by my collection of pins) and realize how far we have come. The decades I’ve been involved in the concrete industry have yielded many innovations that were once thought impossible. They were made possible by great minds and dedicated researchers passionately foraging for new frontiers in concrete development. Professor Ad...

Concrete durability depends highly on deciding on a complete waterproofing system. The latest revision of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) ACI 212.3R Chapter 15 on Permeability Reducing Admixtures state that waterproofing products need to be supported by other products for construction details, like the use of a waterstop for construction joints. If you’re at the ACI Fall Convention, stop by booth 25 to learn more. http://blog.kryton.com/?p=6411
Structural waterproofing is not about a single products ability to stop the ingress of water, but rather a number of products used as a system. External membrane systems, typically used on low-risk projects, are designed to stop water but installation issues, punctures, and defects often lead to leaks. This compromises the structural integrity and allows water to move freely through cracks and jointing. Higher risk projects continue to evolve, wi...
