Pohaku, a very pregnant Monk seal who is quite fond of the tide pools near Māʻili Point, takes a rest on a gray, soggy, cold afternoon on the Westside. She was laying still enough in the same spot a week ago that you could see her belly dance with each movement of her unborn pup.

She's doing her part for her ilk! I was told she was pregnant last year about this time and swims to Kauaʻi to deliver. She's definitely pulling her weight, even if it looks like a struggle. Hehehe...

57 degrees in Waiʻanae!!! 4 degrees for the 49ers game. Same difference. Both are brutal! I think I've lost all feeling in my nose...

Does this not remind you of ʻIolani Palace? It's from a Spanish island off the coast of Morocco.

Those beams of sunlight do look so cool. I like watching it shine though the H3 pass from Kaneohe side.

The voggy morning sunlight shines a spotlight on Mākua Valley's center ridge as it spills over the Ko'iahi side of the valley on O'ahu's remote Wai'anae Coast.

Any time I'm anywhere remotely close, I have to take a walk on ʻIolani Palace grounds. I don't get to town that much and today wasn't any different.

I had a dentist appointment several blocks from there, but I had to stop by, listen to the Royal Hawaiian Band play 'Hawaiʻi Ponoʻi' to kick of its usual Friday lunchtime gig under one of the monkey pod trees, then stand in front facing the flag and get lost in its mana and try to take a mental trip back to what I can only fathom the palace grounds were like 130 years ago.

The palace is such a beautiful structure, made even more so by the likes of who resided there, but I especially like when she is all fancied up like she was a few weeks ago.

Jared Diamond in his book, Guns Germs & Steel mentioned the Hawaiian Kingdom pre-contact with essentially the same facts, only it predates this article, meaning their development was unique and about to get to the next level. He said when a formally tribal society drops its chiefs and gets kings, it means that food gathering is no longer a full-time occupation of everyone in the society, but that now there was time for artisans, bureaucrats, courts, an elite class, taxmen, and so forth. The development was accelerated with contact (Cook violated the Federationʻs Prime Directive on people who were very receptive to new ideas.) Who knows what could have happened had contact never been what happened when it did, say a century later?

+James Pakele In honor of your all-selfies-must-stop post, I'm posting this: my very first and very last selfie. It's not that I despise selfies, that's not the reason I won't take another. I think most of them are hideous, but if someone wants to keep taking one in the bathroom mirror each morning, posing with dick lips and their freshly-styled hair, meh. I'm not taking another because I'm not sure I can top this one.
