Is it just me or is almost every website (Twitter, Facebook, BBC) except Google down right now? When I traceroute, I often get stopped at Level 3 in Newark or Frankfurt - what is going on?

Anonymity vs. Accountability. There are many who believe that the solution to incivil speech in online fora is to have people identify themselves with their “real” names - the names which may appear o...

I'm not sure the market forces would work that way and produce an overall lock-down. It seems like a demand for anonymity would affect the outcome differently - not that I am learned in economics.

If you are referring to the Kathy Sierra I think you are referring to, then that is an ironic example - which may be your intent. Her abuse online was enabled by the anonymity provided to her attackers. Sierra was pushed off the web because of anonymity. Anonymity could be her avenue for expression when she can no longer express herself openly. Pragmatically, the damage to her career cannot be undone via her being able to post anonymously, though a "civil haven" in one social network might help her.

Thanks for the post, it's an interesting topic. In the end we need anonymity in order to have freedom of speech - so be it.

There are two problems:

i) The real names policy
ii) The cleansing of accounts by some algorithm which apparently doesn't allow for humans

What is Google thinking when applying this policy +Vic Gundotra +Bradley Horowitz !?
Violet Blue originally shared:

This is crazy after breaking the story about Google+ accounts being deleted for not complying with the "Real Names" policy, and my continuing coverage on CBSi's ZDNet about the "Real Names" Google+ debacle.

My account has been flagged for not complying to the Google+ "Real Names" policy.

My account will be banned in two days. I will lose services I use daily.

Hey +Vic Gundotra +Bradley Horowitz +Chris Messina +Joseph Smarr +Louis Gray +Amy Walgenbach

This is entirely ridiculous, especially from a user experience perspective.

It is my real name.

I AM complying with your policy.

Hmm ... good point. Though they might not shove me in an MRI if I were on a mechanical one. ;)

+Perry Metzger it seems I can't comment directly on https://plus.google.com/u/0/116685507294337280246/posts/WrFFS3Nngee?

What do you think of his actual premise (that the deal doesn't solve the actual issue)? I'm not saying it's right to be incivil, but I applaud him for raising the actual issue here, which people seem otherwise to forget - America's economy has gone into the toilet, and that is not helped by this kind of broad-brush cutting without investment in the country's future. This suggests that neither party nor the President cares significantly enough about the long-term health of the country and its citizens. That, I think, encourages strong language.

I think that Mr. Nocera and I probably share few beliefs in common, including the fact that I assume that he simply wants to do what is right, while he would doubtless assume that I'm evil because I disagree with him often enough.

John, I post opinions to be public and expect to be shot down but sometimes upheld. There are other posts I make that are private and ment only for one person (social neywork, keyword sicial) I expect those can come back to hount me.

Never found the word 'stream' on G+ to be more apt than today.

Google+ is not (yet) happening for me as a "social" experience. Feel like I'm drifting away from it even though I'm a big fan of Picasa, Gmail and other Google components... nothing compelling for me yet in Plus - what are people doing with it that keeps them coming back?

Interesting... if G+ is intended to be like Twitter, then I think it succeeds. Like Facebook though... not yet.
