"The media have to decide: do they see their role as being to inflame or to inform?" Speaking at a TEDx conference in London earlier this year, Lord David Puttnam talked about the media's role in democracy and society's collective duty of care. The context of his speech was political citizenship, and some of the references are specific to the political landscape of Britain, but his overall theme, which he expresses most eloquently, echoes the principles and purpose of the Foundation.

Encouraging adventure travellers to go the extra mile and be reporters of truth in the world.
Introduction
The Ted Simon Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Northern California.

We believe that all adventure travellers have it in them to be reporters of truth in the world, and we want to encourage them to broadcast that truth by whatever means may be appropriate.

The words we live by are Exploration, Comprehension and Communication.

Our ultimate aim is to promote understanding, reduce tension and to favour the chances of peace between our many cultures.

Travellers survive and flourish by adapting to the world around them. As a result they learn a particular truth about the societies they move through. What they learn can be of great value in explaining the peculiarities of foreign cultures and in reaffirming what is common to all of us; generosity to strangers and a desire to live in peace.

The purpose of the Foundation is to bring those truths to the general public, to counter the generalisations of the media, and to remind us all that life is lived family by family, mile by mile, regardless of the great issues which may be dominating the news.

The Ted Simon Foundation is currently supporting a total of 77 Jupiter's Travellers from 14 countries. They are adventurers selected from the many applications we receive for their potential to help the Foundation fulfil its purpose.
