So, over the course of the past couple of weeks, I have been asked by quite a few people what this "Movember" thing I keep talking about is, and I figured it would be beneficial to explain the event and my reasoning behind supporting it.
The Movember Foundation is a charitable organization that supports prostate/testicular cancer research and men's health initiatives. Think Susan G. Koman for prostate cancer. Every year, in the month of November, they host a fundraising drive, called Movember, during which they encourage men to grow mustaches and seek donor support for their efforts. The money raised goes directly to the Movember foundation to fund their initiatives in research for treatment and screening of prostate and testicular cancer, and raising awareness. They are not some fly by night operation, and last year raised over $126 million dollars to support their cause.
So, why do this? My life has been significantly impacted by cancer. In 2004, I lost my father to caner. In 2007, I lost a good friend to cancer, in 2009, another good friend, and finally, two weeks ago, my mother-in-law lost her fight to cancer. I despise the disease. Movember provides a fun and entertaining way to raise money to fight it. Yes, the moneys raised go to men's health specifically, but any advancements made help our understanding of how to better treat and diagnose cancer in general as well. I also believe that the problem of prostate cancer specifically is horribly under-emphasized. Prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of men's cancer deaths. Over the course of their lifetimes, it is estimated that as many as 1 in 6 mean will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. In 2012, and estimated 28,000 men will die from this disease. Though the campaign may be fun and entertaining, the enemy is DEADLY serious.
So, as mustache season draws to a close, I ask for your assistance. Please support a great cause and help raise money and awareness for prostate cancer and men's health. The cause is horribly undeserved and you can make a real difference. Click the link below to donate. To those of you who have contributed already, you have my most sincere thanks. It truly means a great deal that you have supported a cause that I hold in such high regard. To date, with your support, we have raised over $400! I would love to see that number get over $500. Any amount that you can spare helps the cause, even if it is only a couple of bucks. I also understand that not everyone has money to spare, especially as we come into the holiday season. To those of you who cannot make a donation, I can still use your help. Please, help spread the word. Forward this message to everyone that you know. The more people who are aware of the great things that Movember is doing, the better.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope that you can offer support in some way. If not for me, support the cause for the men in your life. Fathers, grandfathers, husbands, brothers, and uncles the world over thank you for your support.
